OPIUM FOUND.
CHINESE BEFORE COURT. (TRESS ASSOCIATION TELEOIUU.) NAPIER, February 11. A Chinese named Loo Keo was charged in the Magistrate's Court this morning with being found in possession of opium in a form suitublo for smoking. . Mr \Y. Hose, of tho Customs Department, said that evidently the defendant, who was not a smoker himself, was engaged in distributing opium to other smokers. Defendant, it appeared, went to the Duco Motor Service office on December 17th and left a parcel to bo sent to Wairoa. Tho police examined tlio pnrcel and found that among other things it contained u half-pound tin of opium. Defendant, when interviewed by tho police, said ho received the parcel from Wellington and was despatching it on to Wniron without knowing what was in it. However, on examination, it was found tho package was marked with.the Napier Customs stamp and the opium wns wrapped in a Napier newspaper. Mr Hallett for the defence, said that it was no offence unless defendant had opium in his possession. Defendant was not found in possession of opium. The Magistrate reserved his decision.
