MASTER PAINTERS' PROTEST.
DAY LABOUR FOR GOVERNMENT WORK. (FKEtS AMOCUTIOir TELIGEAX.) INVERCARGILL, February 2. The action of the Public Works Department in taking over all work on Government buildings, and doing the work by day labour instead of lettiug contracts to the trade, was strongly condemned at the annual conference of Master Painters and Decorators today.
Mr Pratt suggested that the individual Associations should take tho matter up, as it was a serious thing for the trade.
Mr Anderson expressed the opinion that efforts should "be made to prevent this principle being extended, and quoted cases of work coating considerably more under the new method than under the contract system. The principle was a most vicious one and was unfair to the ratepayers and the trade. Mr Loekwood moved: "That this conference disapproves of the principle of tho Public Works Department not merely overseeing work on public buildings, but carrying out such work by day labour Instead of letting tho work by' contract, irrespective 01 the cost, w'hich in many cases is higher by day labour than by contract. Further, that the executive bt. requested to fco into the question with a view to taking action for the protection of the trade." • The motion was carried.
