HARBOUR BOARD MEETS. A meeting of the Lyttelton Harbour Board was hold yesterday morning, Mr W. J. Walter presiding. There wero also present: Tha Hon. li. Moore, M.L.0., Dr. H. T. J. Thacker, Messrs 11. Holland, M.P., 11. T. Armstrong, M.P., F. Horroll, R. Galbralth, M. J. Miller, \V. T. Lester, J. Storry, 0. Scott, W. G, Gallagher, and \V. K. McAlpino. An application from tho Entertainment' Committee of the Canterbury Yachting Association that tbo Board should allow the use of the tug Lyttelton for tho conveyance of tho boys ol the secondary schools to viow one of the Sanders Cup contests was refused. A letter was received from tho Canadian Government Merchant Marine, Ltd., expressing its appreciation of tho excellent services rendered by tho Board's staff in Lyttelton during the past year. It was stated that the company's ships had obtained excellent dispatch on all occasions. Permission wan granted to the Pleasant Point Boat and Yacht Club to construct n boat shed and alipwny on Rat Island, in tho upper part of the Estuary. Leavo was granted to tlio Board's engineers to attend the annual conference of tho Society of Civil Engineers at Auckland in March. An application was mado by Mr A. R. Blank that a life-saving reel should be placed opposiU the corner of the Esplanade, North Beach, and Beach road, was' referred to tho: chairman and secretary for action. Tho tender of Messrs Reeso Bros., Ltd., of Christchurch, of £37,502 18s 2d for timber for No. 3 jetty was accepted;' It was decided to call tenders for. tho necessary cranes and capstans for Gladstone pier. Finance Committee. The Finance Committee reported that the following sums of money had been invested:— £4OOO in £IOO debentures in tho New Brighton Borough Council, South New Brighton bridge loan, at 5] per cent., maturing October Ist, 1955. £IOOO in £IOO debentures in the Rangirira County Council Bpecial loan of £IOOO for workers' dwellings, for 30 years, at 5} por cont. ' £ One £IOO debenture at 51 per cent, purchased at £99 in the Christchurch Municipal Electricity Loan, maturing in 1033 with accrued interent. £ISOO in £IOO debentures in the- Hakerua Drainage Beard's loan of £ISOO at 6 per cent, for 20 years. £IO,OOO had been placed on fixed deposit for twelve mouths in the Bank of New Zca* land. Engineer's Beport. The Engineer (Mr Cyrus J. Jt. Williams) reported that the Vacuum Oil Co., which had leased the land northward of the dock, and was erecting oil storage tanks thereon, had submitted plans of its pipo connexions between tho leased land and the dredge's wharf. Ho saw no reason why the Board should grant its approval. From November 26th to January 28th, tho dredge Canterbury lifted from the outer channel and deposited, at sea, a quantity of 3C.400- tons. The dredge was laid up -for overhaul and aunual survey on December 11th, and floated out on January 20th. A trial trip, was made on the 25th, and dredging has been resumod. During tho came period the grab dredge Tewhaka lifted 7000 tons from No. 4E, No. 4W, No. OE, No. 6W, No. 7\V, and tho Gladstone pi or. The laying of the upper decking had been commenced. The electric wiring under the wharf had been completed. -and three - of the lamps had been erected. The four three-ton cranes were in commission by December. 21st last, and were working satisfactorily except for defects in the hoisting ropes. Curious defects showed' themselves in the hoisting ropes soon after the cranes were at work. The matter had been taken'up with the contractors, and cuitable non-twisting ropes had been cabled for. He hoped that he would be able to keep the cranes at work until the arrival of . proper ropes. The first of these cranes had not been in commission a week before, ft was called upon to lift weights of- between three' and. four tons. The temporary sheds to house tho Sanders Cup boats had been erected, and minor repairs had been carried out on various works. • - -
