THE ECONOMICS OF WHEATGROWING.
TO TBI *DITO* 0» Til* PBKSS Sir,—Your correspondent, "Primary Producer" is very interesting, though he does not give much information on the actual cost of producing a bushel of wheat, which, I admit, is a difllcult problem, and could only be ascortained by taking costs over a series of say five years, and over varied classes of land. Tho estimate of £9 10s per acre is surely wide of tho mark, as £ls per acre land will often produce up to 20 bushels per acre, and reckoned to pay the grower well. From Farmers' Union discussions it seems none have much idea as to actual cost per bushel, which is what we want to know- not per acre. The public know the selling price, arid when it is high, naturally conclude farmers are doing well—most industries know the actual cost of what they produce, and add a fair percentage for profit. Surely this problem of coßts is a matter which Lincoln College might take up; and one wonders why it has not dono so years ago, with several practical farmers on the Board, and so give further proof of its benefits to farmers. It seems little use stressing tho point of increased protection, with so many motorcars as evidence of the prosperity of farmers generally, which may be public opinion at any rate. I admit tho problem is a difficult one, with tho elements, pests, and other things to contend with, but should not bo beyond, say a "Brainy" College Director.—"tours, etc. AN OLD GROWER.
