Mr John Shiels, who has been coach I ing foreman at Greymouth for the I ]>ast four years, and" has gone on ex ! tended leave prior to retiring on super j animation, was entertained at the Railway Jlall last evening by a large gathering of members of the traffic and station staffs. During the evening Mr Shiels was presented with a gold watch suitably inscribed, the presenta- j tion being made by Guard U. Rose. Mr Shiels was also the recipient of a silver-mounted umbrella from the boarders and staff of the Koyai Hotel. Mr j Shiels left by this morning's express i for Christehurch, en route to Bluff, where he will permanently reside. | Mr and Mrs Inclsou returned this j afternoou from Christehurch and I Timaru. j Wood Pulp Industry. j For some months past negotiations ; have been proceeding on the West I Coast in connexion with a proposal to manufacture wood pulp. The initial step in the proposed scheme was . taken at to-day's sitting of the Grey- j mouth 'Wnrden's Court, when appliea- | tion was made for a water-race license j of 'MO heads for the generating of : electric power. The application was I recommenmed by the Warden, Mr W. j Mcldrum, subject to any conditions the ! Minister may impose. ! Lambs for Canterbury. Mr George Ferguson, who, during his visit to tho West Coast purchased 6000 lambs, returned to Sheffield this morning. Tholambs were purchased in two lots of 4400 and 1000 respectively, and were mostly bought in the Wataroa district. Magistrate's Court. At to-day's sitting of the Greymouth Magistrate's Court, Mr W. Mcldrum, S.M., gave judgment for plaintiff by default in the following ease: Hill Bros, v. Matthew Sheldon, £lO 2s lOd. On a judgment summons, Mervyn Win was ordered to pay !Cl> 2s, with solicitor's fee £1 Is. to Mary Sullivan forthwith, in default 14 days' imprisonment, warrant to be suspended provided lie pays £-1 per fortnight. Seddon Memorial Medals. The winners of the Seddon memorial medals (girls and boys) for 192(5 are both pupils of the Greymouth Technical School, Noeline Daphne Trau and Hugh Arthur Jones. The medals arc awarded annually to the. pupils securing the highest marku in English and arithmetic. Electric Suction Dredge. At tho Greymouth Harbour Board's meeting this evening specifications were submitted by the Engineer for the proposed electric hydraul': suction dredge to bo used in connexion with the Lagoon docks, 'when it was decided to have plans of tho proposed works prepared as required by the, Harbour Boards Act, and forwarded for the consent of tho Govcmor-in-Council. Tho Engineer wtrs instructed to engago any necessary assistance required in tho preparation of tho plans. 3eefton Rainfall. . During tho month of January (3,02 inches of rain wero recorded at the Iloefton School of Mines with rain on nine days, the maximum rainfall being on January 31st with 2.03 inches. The average rainfall for January for the preceding twenty years was 5.82, with 13 days of rain. Hot, dry weather provailed during tho greater part of the month with shade temperatures ranging from 76 degrees to 8C degrees dry bulb, and 62 degrees to 72 degrees wet bulb.
