HUNDREDS OUT OF WORK.
CONCERN IN AUCKLAND. DEMONSTRATION DURING ROYAL VISIT THREATENED. [THE PEEBS Special Berriw.] AUCKLAND, January 31. A meeting of the Auckland Unemployment Belief Committee was held to-day, Mr A. Spencer, president of the Auckland Employers' Association, being in tho chair. Mr Spencer said tho position was extraordinary, there being juat as many men out of work now as in the winter months.*' On the Labour Department's books at noon to-day there were 568 men waiting for work. Mr Oakley Browne said his figures were that approximately 1400 were out of work, and to this had to be added 400 timber workers who were working only four days a week and less: Mr E. Phelan said it was not a fair thing to bring out immigrants with no work, no homes, and no prospects ahead of them. "It is held by these workers that the Government should be forced to stop immigration, and take steps to provide work for tho people here/ he said. "As a matter of fact it is quite probable that a demonstration vriJl take place during the visit of the Duke of York, but I hope that such a contingency will not bo allowed to hapAfter discussion, it was resolved that the Government be requested to set up an expert committee to discover what effect the Btream of immigration has on unemployment and tho labour market. A further resolution was carried unanimously, to the effect that official figures be obtained from all Union secretaries of the number jof unemployed, these figures to be submitted to a special meeting of the committee, which will be held on Monday next to receive further information, and formulate a future policy. Tho committeo also resolved to urge all local bodies who anticipated raising loans, or who had raised loans, to proceed with reproductive works.
