OBITUARY. MRS J. A. PANNETT. There was laid to her rest in the Springston Cemetery yesterday, Louisa Jane, the wife .of Mr John A. Pannett, "Ringraer Laughton," er s Pass road, .well-known in the City, as a retired farmer, and chairman of-the Farmer's Operative Association tor 20 years. ' ' i Born at St. Just, Cornwall, England, Mrs Pannett came to New Zealand with her parents, the lat© Mr and Mrs Thomas Stevens, sixty-seven years ago, and first lived in a house near the present. Montreal street bridge. After her marriage she lived. 111 various parts of Canterbury, always sharing i with' her husband the trials and difficulties of those early days of pioneer farming. She wis a 'great lover of flowers, and tlie cultivation, particularly of English flowers and trees, was one of'her chiet pleasures. For nearly thirty years the deceased lady bad been a semi-invalid, but nevertheless, during the war years she knitted and sewed continuously to help supply the soldiers' needs. She Was an ardent supporter of the >Bapfist Church, and up till a few days before her death a deep reader. • Besides, her husband, who. is himself ill at the present time, she leaves a family of six sons and five.daughters, to whom her patience and gentleness, despite much suffering, will ever bo a tender memory.

OPENING OF WINTER GARDEN. Last night a most successful dance marked ' the, opening of ine Winter Garden under the management of Messrs P. Burke and Company. The ball-room was decorated with golden baskets of ferns suspended from the ceiling, while the lights were shaded with gold and lqmon shades. .The supper tables were adorned with bowls of pink carnations and sweet peas. WEDDINGS. I JESSEP —MILES, | A very pretty wedding was celebrated at Rugby street Methodist Church recently, when Zeta, youngest daughter of Mr aud Mrs H. M. Miles, of Merivale, was married to Herbert, son of the late Mr "and Mrs C. Jessep, Timaru. The church was artistically decorated witli large bowls of blue and pink hydrangeas and maples. . The bride, who. was given away by her father, wore a simple frock of cream mousseline, the bodice of which was' vandyked on to a shired skirt, the hem of the frock being finished with an unusual ribbon ruching. ' A touch of hydrangea blue was introduced into her bouquet of cream lilies and roses. Hen hand embroidered veil, which fell in soft folds to the grouud, was arranged with a trail of orange blossom. The bride was attended by Miss Peggy Michael, of Tai Tapu, whose frock of larkspur blue georgette was trimmed with tiny motifs of pink and green sequins. A beautiful shower bouquet of pink carnations and rosea provided an effective• finish'to her toilette. After the ceremony relatives and intimate friends were entertained at the home of the bride's.parents. Mrs Miles, who received the guests, wore a handsome frock of navy crepc-de-chine, with touches of oriental trimming. She carried a bouquet of scarlet rosos and carnations. . When Mr and Mrs Jessep left by motor for their wedding tour, the latter wore a becoming frock of sedge green crepe-dc-chine, the skirt of which was finely pleated. Her hat was of the same tone, and she carried a fawn tailored coat.

WOOD—COOPER. A pretty-' and uncommon wedding was solemnised at St. Mary s Ghuich, Timaru, on January 13th, by the Veil. Archdeacon Julius, when Ellis John Wood, son of Mr S. Wood, late of Timaru, was married to Millicent, second daughter of Mr and Mrs W. G. Cooper,. Memorial avenue, Timaru. Mrs Julius presided at the organ, and the church was beautifully decorated with Christmas lilies, hydrangeas, arid asparagus fern, by the Gir]'Guides, under their Captain, Miss Knubley. The bride, who cntqred the church with her father to the strains of the Wedding March, looked-charming in a French model frock .of pale pink crepe de chine and georgette, with long siceves finished with narrow bands at the wrist. The dress was handsomely lx?aded in pearls of various sizes to form the artistic design, flared at the sides,, and finished with pale pink streamers. On .the left shoulder a. spray of orange blossom was worn. A lovely pink tulle veil, richly embroidered," was worn with a,pretty pearl coronet. A shower bouquet of pale pink begonias, sweet peas, and maidenhair fern, and a pearl necklet, the gift of the bridegroom; completed a charming toilette. . . Miss Eila Soffe. was bridesmaid, and woro a p ale blue georgette dress, flared at the sides, and finished with blue rosettes. She wore a coronet of silver leaves and forget-me-nots and earned a beautiful bouquet of delphiniums, sweet-peas, and maidenhair fern, with trailers of asparagus. . Mr Ilae Itollinson carried out the duties of best .man. i As the bride left the church a Girl Guide's small brother presented' her with a silver horseshoe. St. Mary s and Highfield Girl Guides, with their Captains, Knubley, Cooper, and Lane, and the Brownies' Captain, Miss McArthur, formed the guard of. honour. After the ceremony, a'reception was held at the "Oxford* Tea Rooms.. The tables were beautifully arranged with pink and mauve sweet peas " and maidenhair fern.. Mrs Cooper received her guests' wearing a black silk marocain dress, - handsomely; beaded in silver boads-and' trimmed: with- silver friiige, a black h'at with black osprey and ■mauve, violets, underneath the brim,' and a marabout ; fur, the gift Of the bride. She carried' a shower bouquet of mauve and creaiu sweet; peas and maidenhair fern. • The bridegroom's mother wore pink ■ relieved with navy blue, and hat to match j She carried a posy of cream sweet peas with maidenhair; fern. The bride's, travelling dress_ was an ensemble suit of floral silk, with b'ois-de-rose coat and hat to match. She also wore a handsome fox fur. In the afternoon the happy couple, whose home will be in Ashburton, left for the north.

"LAVENDER TEA." Mrs Maurice Macfarlane was hostess at a most enjoyable "lavender .tea" given at Ballantyne's yesterday morn-; ing, in honour of Misß Kathleen : Helmore, whose marriage takes place next week. The tables were decorated with lavender flowers, arid each guest brought a laven.der gift for the bride-elect. Mrs Macfarlane's guests were: Miss Kathleen Helmore, Mrs Neil- Rattray, Mrs D.
