TIMARU.

SOCIAL AND PERSONAL. Mrs G. E. Ussher (Sefton street) returned from the Hermitage yesterday. Mrs Forbes Wallace (Waimate) is the guest of Mrs R. A. Rickman (Church street west). Mis R. Hamlyn (Auckland) is on a visit to Mrs W. D. Revcll (Jackson street). Mrs and Miss Corson (Oamaru), who have been staying at the Bungalow, left for Oamaru yesterday. Mr and Mrs Donald Burnett and family returned from Te Aka station, Hakatr.ramea, yesterday, and are in their house in Wai-iti road. Mrs Frank Bradshaw returned to Waimate yesterday, after a' short visit to tho Misses Woollcombe (Trafalgar Btreet). Mrs Arthur Pearee (Wellington) is the guest of Miss McLean (Sealey street). Mrs Ernest lo Cren arrived from Dunedin yesterday. Mr and Mrs Langley and family left yesterday for Palmerston North. Mrs R. Adams, who was with them has returned to Dunedin. To-day' b Picnic. A general holiday will bo observed in Timaru to-day, on the occasion of the United Friendly Societies' picnic, which this year will be hold at Waimate. Harbour Board. The monthly meeting of the Timaru Harbour Board" was held yesterdav, the chairmt.n, Mr W. Hayman presiding. There were also present: Messrs .T. Bitchener, M.P., J. R. Flatman, G. J. Wallace, IT. B. G. Johnstone, T. B. Gavick, J. McCort, W. T. Ritchie, J. Kennedy, A. R. Guild, A. F. Cnmpbell, and G. T. Davidson., A motion of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr Kiunerney, who was for many years the Board's solicitor, was carried. A letter was received from the Marine Department, acknowledging the Board's alteration of a by-law allowing for reduced rates on the carriage of returned empties. The letter was received. The American consular service wrote asking for pon particulars. The chairman stated that he did not think any reply should be made. They should give nothing away, and if the information was wanted it should be obtained from the Naval Departme - '. This was ugreed to. The Canadian Government Merchant Marine, Ltd., wrote extending the season's greeting to the Board and thanking the Board for the satisfactory way in which the staff had handled the company's vessels in the port during the past year. It was decided to send a letter of acknowledgment. » The Medical Officer of Health, Dr. T. Fletcher Telford, wrote suggesting that the Board keep on hand a limited supply of rat poison, in view of the liability of the importation of disease. The letter was recoived. The application of the National Mortgage and Agency Co. for the erection of a petrol pump was granted. The British Imperial Oil Company wrote'asking for permission to erect a kerosene storage tank of 8000 gallons on their oil storage area. The Board's engineer reported that provided the tank was erected to the satisfaction of the Explosives Department there should be no objection to its erection. It was decided that a sub-committee, with power to act, interview the company's expert on his arrival. In view of the risk of accident it was decided that in future, persons be prohibited from fishing or congregating on the wharves, while vessels are being moored, unmoored or lying at them, and that a by-law be framed to vest the Board with such power. In considering the question of dredging Mr Isaacs stated that it would bo a good idea to remove the silt from the north of the Marine parade, whether or not the loan proposals were carried Dredging there would save the channel from silting up. The engineer was called in, and he reported that this work could be gone on with as soon as he had finished the south cut in tho channel.
