NORTH CANTERBURY.

DARFIELD. The progressive euchre matches which have been held in the Convent school have been a great success each evening. At the last evening the runners up for the aggregate prizes were greatly reduced in number, the w.nners finishing with tnree games to the good. -Mr A. Ott-en won the men's and Mrs lleardou the ladies' prizes. The players winning the higaest number of games, but not prize-u mners during the tournament, were Mrs D. Redmond, lady; MrC. Priest, gentleman. The w.nners ot the prizes tor the last evening were first lady, Mrs Reardon; second lady, Miss A. Stewart; first man, Mr Manson; second, Mr Gallagher. Consolalady, Miss A. Painter; man, Mr F. MuJiugh. A dainty supper was provided by the ladies, and a very enjoyable evening was brought to a close by dancing, the music tor which was supplied by Messrs Dan and Dave Clinton, and Miss M. Nolan. Recently a children's party under the auspices of the Plunket Society was held in the Memorial Hall. Each child under the age of ten was presented with a Christmas present. During the afternoon the children were entertained to a number of games, after which they were provided by the ladies with afternoon tea.

rhere is an abundance of grass, and stock of all classes is in excellent condition. The transportation of fat lambs to the freezing works has now commenced, and as there was a good lambing this season a record number of sheep will be railed this year.

HORNBY-ISLINGTON There was an exceptionally large attendance at the Social Hall, Islington, on Monday nisht. when the Hornbv School held their break-up concert. Prior to the conclusion of the concertRoberts thanked all those who had assisted in organising the concert.

CUST. A meeting of the Ladies' Guild was held in the St. James's schoolroom this week with a large attendance of members, the Vicar (the Rev. H. 0. Hanby) presiding. It was decided to hold a parish picnic in connexion with the Sunday School outing in Mr Nankevill's grounds in Tippings road on New Year's Day. It was resolved to pay out of the Guild funds the annua] quota towards St. Anne's Home maintenance, £4, and it was announced that a Christmas hamper for the Home was being arranged on a voluntary basis, gifts to be brought to the Parish Hall on the afternoon of December 22nd. It was announced that Mrs Herbert Brown had again invited the Guild to view the beautiful gardens at Mt. Thomas, at a date to be arranged, probably at the end of January. The invitation was cordially accepted. The Guild decided to meet on tfanuary I3th. An executive committee has been appointed consisting of Mesdames Hanby, Forsyth, Wolff. Rvde. H. Tal'att ard Mi« Cooper for Oust; and Mesdames F. n J Pester, and Miss « Addinell for West Eyreton. The Guild decided to extend an invitation to the Sv/annanoa Guild to appoint two representatives to the committee with a view to constituting it a parochial executive. Miss K Addinell is secretary for West Eyreton, _ and MI6S Cooper has agreed to continue to act as secretary for Cust until the annual meeting.
