FIRE AT WAIUKU.
BLOCK OP BUILDINGS
DESTROYED.

AUCKLAND, June 24,
A fire occurred shortly after sis o'clock this evening at Waiuku, and destroyed a wooden block of shops right at the lower end of the main street, opposite an hotel. The block was a one-storeyed structure, and one of tho oldest in the street.
It comprised the following premises: Defence offices, A. MakgflPs motor worksho D and garago, J. F. Dennelly'a music studio. Roberts' fish shop, W. Cook's fish shop, W. McEwen's office, and Williams Brothers' electrical workshop and showroom. Tho three last-named premises comprised the lop portion of the block, owned by McEwen, and the remainder was owned by Makgill. Williams Brc~i thors' stock and fittings and Donnelly's piano and sundries were saved, but MakgilPs plant and the contents of the other premises were destroyed. Tho fire provided an hour's intense excitement It started in Makgill's garago. A car was being cranked by Mackgill, when it backfired, and the rear portion burst into flames, which Spread quickly. An unsuccessful tittempt was made to push the car outside, but the ceiling caught fire. The flames* then spread ramdly and tho whole block was burned. It is nnuerstood that the building was iiißureof for £950. The loss is very extensive.- —
