In the House of Commons, the Finance Bill passed the committee stage after a succession of amendments were defeated, including a suggestion for the reduction of sugar and whisky duties, and the Entertainment Tax. Mr Winston Churchill, Chancellor of the Exchequer, stated that instead of a remission, there was a probability, if the present situation continued, that revenue must be strengthened.
