Winter (Second Day). TURF GOSSIP. Acceptances for the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's Winter Meeting close to-morrow. The Hawke's Bay Hunt Club's Annual Steeplechase Meeting takes placo on the Hastings racecourso to-day. The Cheviot Bacing Club, whose application to change from & Racing Club to a Trotting Club, under the Gaming Act Amendment, 1924, lias not been granted, is taking steps to send a petition to Parliament regarding the matter. Friday, of this week, will be a busy day with'the secretary of the Canterbury Jockey Club, as on that date entries will fall due at 8 p.m. for the leading events of the Grand National Meeting. The races calling for the attention of owners and trainers wiU be as follows:—N.Z. Grand National Steeplechase, £2OOO (three miles and a half),- and Winter Cup (flat), £IOOO, (one mile) on the first day, August 10th; N.Z. Grand National Hurdle Eace, £ISOO (about two miles and a half); and Beaufort Steeplechase, £6OO (about two miles and a half), on ffte second day, Augußt 12th; and the Sydenham Hurdle Race, £SOO (two miles), and the Lincoln Steeplechase, £7OO (about three miles), on the third day, August 14th. Winkle's Best and Miss Minerva have been doing satisfactory work of late, and E. Emerson should have a successful season with them. The disappointing Bon Skirl, by Boniform from Skirl, is to be given an opportunity to earn distinction over hurdles. He had his first lesson with His Majesty in the schooling ring yesterday morning, and the way he hopped over the obstacles stamps him a* a likely candidate for hurdle honours. J B. Pearson recently had sent to him a hunter by Gay Lad from Carmania, half-brother to Geranial, which he was to prepare.for the forthcoming Hunt Meetings. The usual qualification certificate accompanied the horse, but apparently the rider who qualified him must have known all the gateways. He was tried over a brush fence at Eiccarton on Monday, but made a poor attempt to negotiate it, so Pearson decided yesterday to put him over the pony jumps, with Lisogne, At the first little hurdle he mado a feeble effort and fell over the side rail. His rider, B. Shaw, was unable to get clear, and the \orse rolled . on him. Shaw was badly shaken, ani was removed to his home. W Hobbs has Mr E. S. puttren's gelding Bachelor, Absurd from Procrastinate, in fine order, and-ibe wellborn chestnut should have a successful three-year-old record. F. Lind intends putting Civility into work again next week, at Wanganui. 8£ spell she has had since ****»&: nni Winter Meeting has freshened the daughter of Elysian up nicely, and she will probably be got ready for the Winter. Cup. The coming three-year-old half-brother fl>y California-Civilisation) to Civility, which lind has just brok«*■.*»* put into work is ft big, loosely buUt wit, with a nice long stride. The colt gives promise of proving a good performer. It is stated that Valieare'ti five thousand five hnndred-gnlnea brother, la now being hacked about on Ms. owner's country property.., His first race may bY the BreeW Plato, at Bandwiek, •with the Maribytnong Plato, to Melbourne, next. The Magpie tw*yeat-old pre***** by Mr Bra Ohaffey to ba taffied to tie interests of, St. .HospitaL Melbourne, realised £18,750 in ' shilling tickets for that institution. When he. was pnt op for sale last week by ;his: fortunate winner, .a labourer at Birchip, Victoria, he fetohed 100 guineas, the. purchaser being the well-known sportsman, Mr John Wren. Has he got a bargain! For the first time since his enfoteea retirement for a time fromi the torf over the famous Purser case, just after Heroio had won the Caulfleld Guineas of 1924 to them, Mr J. B. Corteen's colours were again seen in public last week. They were carried by Bnow ■■'-■ Hre, a four-year-old Pommern horse he bought while on his visit to England, and were borne into third place, behind a winner that came from the same stable, though of different ownership. A few more public gallops and fencing and Fireblight will be amongst the winners. She got over the jumps in ' the Napier Steeplechase, but she seemed to lack dash between the fences, which has been one of the characteristics of her attempts in the past. Eioearton stables are strongly represented in the list of nominations for the Wellington Earing Club's Meeting next month. Charlatan, Tigerland, Whipcord, Blue Hall, and North Inch are engaged in the steeplechase: Sayonara, Bonomel, Projector, Bonatic, Vagabond, Te Kawa, and Prince Ferou? in hurdle races; and Carnot, Rapier, Cultivation, Rivalry, Serotina, Kilns, Waterlow, and Peho in flat races. ' The "Weekly Press and Referee" will be published to-day, and readers will find within its pages a wealth of reading matter on sport of every description. In the racing section a special correspondent deals at length with the Napier Park Bacing Club's Winter Meeting, relating many items of interest concerning the form of horses engaged at the Meeting. The Marquis tells of B. Seed's success as the leading New Zealand horseman, and The Book, Wayfarer, Spectator, and Antisthenes write on matters of interest to every sportsman. In the trotting section of the paper Searchlight tells of happenings at the Auckland Trotting Club's Winter Meeting, while correspondents from all parts forward the latest items of nows from their respective districts. When Nigger Minstrel was thrown opt of training last spring, it was stated that the most recent trouble that came to the soa of All Black was situated in his hitherto sound leg. Advices to hand from Woodville, says the "Manawatu Times," state that good hopes are entertained in regard to the brown horse proving trainable, '£»" and everyone will wish that these hopes kv r will be fulfilled, for "The Nigger" S?j&\ta a really fine specimen of the thoronghtSfed, and his bold dash for victory jg&ft decision of the Australian Jockey of 1924, when he ran 'Sfliffi|fe*'hea4 for first honours, showthat he possessed a

AUCKLAND T.O. TO-DATS PROSPECTS. (sracux. to isa sxtui AUCKLAND, June 22. The Auckland Trotting Club will conclude its Winter Meeting to-morrow, and the prospects of a successful day's racing looks bright. During the past few days the weather has been fine, and indications point to it remaining so, but in the absence of a drying wind the course is likely to be somewhat heavy.'' In each of the seven races the acceptances are highly satisfactory, and the various events are not likely to be won without keen struggles. In the chief race, the Prince of Wales Handicap, there are twelve acceptors, and with the exception of All Bell, Becky Logan, Logan Chief, and Dillon Wilkes, the rest were seen in commission on the opening day in the Campbell Handicap. For her win in the last-named race Logan Lou has been penalised 36yds, and she now looks to be held safe by Cardinal Logan, who is meeting her on 24yds better terms, and promises to start favourite. The Logan Pointer gelding reads well, but will require to be on his best behaviour to finish in front of Becky Logan and Imprint, if the latter is better handled than he was on Saturday. Twenty-eight useful horses are engaged in the Adams Cup Memorial Handicap, which promises to be a great race Southern stables will be represented by Silk Thread, Sea Pearl, Ayr, and Direct Wood. This quartet are likely to be well backed, and may be found taking part in the settlement of affairs, while Marshal Neil should add interest to the race. _ Others with possibilities on the day are Stanmoor, Buz Buz, Gold Sovereign, Sister Beatrice, Waikaha, Money Spider, Admiral Hood, Liberate, Bell Harold, and Peter Bingen.
