TRAMWAY FARES.

METROPOLITAN SYSTEMS COMPARED. (special to the press.) WELLINGTON, June 21. After reviewing tramway fares in the various centres, the "Local Authorities Handbook," the new publication of the Census and Statistics Office, states that in 1914 Wellington .was the cheapest and Dunodin the dearest among the metropolitan tramway systems, but in 1925 Wellington was the dearest (followed closely by Christchurch), while Dunedin was the cheapest. During the intervening eleven years, fares in Wellington rose 49 per cent.,, in Auckland 36 per cent., in ChristChurch 28 per cent., and in Dunedin only 5 per cent. Among the factors: responsible for the relative dearness of. fares in Wellington are hilly country, high cost of power and labour, and low seating capacity of cars because of tho structural limits caused by tho narrowness of the streets. Christchurch is flat, which is an advantage in haulage, but which reduces; tiamway revenue by encom-aging the cyclist.
