In the House of JRepresentatlves, In reply to a question whether penny postage could not be Inaugurated to coincide with the opening of Canberra, the Postmaster-General (the Hon. W. G. Gibson) said that the impracticability of this being done would be sean when he mentioned that since he came into office new awards had added £1,000,000 to the department's wages bilL If Australia's telephone charges, he said, were the same as those made by private companies in the United States the revenue of the department would be £3,000,000 greater than now.
