EXCITEMENT IN GERMANY. EX-KAISER'S CLAIM BALLOT* (by CIBLi—I>2ESS ' ASSOC! iTtOX—COJYHIGaT.) (tt:ST3AI.Ii;- ASD S.Z. CABLE ASSOCUTIOH.) (Eeeeived June 18th, 10.5 p.m.) - BERLIN*, June 17. All Germany is on tip-toe with expcetatipn, in view of the momentous referendum on Sunday, on the question °f or otherwise,, of the vast,.valuable properties claimed by the ex-Kaiser. •The ballot paper is a. simple document ■ requiring a'cross in a circle for or againßtJ ; Whichever' side wins what is .virtually a conflict between the public. versus the Monarchy, will enormously strengthen the ' political position. A' campaign "on behalf of "confiscation has been .vigorously carried on, though no voice "has been officially-rais-ed" on behalf of 1 the Doom exile. Nevertheless is difficult to. forecast the result. tSome' 20,000,000.at least.must vote in favour, in order to carry the day. 1 ' : - That the ex-Kaiser will.be reducedto. beggary, even 'if confiscation is carried ;is,; of. course, nonsense. •He will be given a pension, together with, some property-.which; he unquestionably owns and will remain a rich man as will, also, his' ex-Koyal colleagues. The ex-Kaiser at present receives, the equivalent of £SOO weekly -from the Republic. Furniture, plate, and art objects at the lavish Doom residence represent a substantial- fortune. .. He received £50,000 from one book, and is asking £60,000 for a manuscript just' completed. He remains extraordinarilyextravagant, scarcely being able to'balance his budget. i'' The ballot concema 90 eastles, 600,000 i acres of land, and £50,000,000 in money. -■ ■ •
