THE PRIME MINISTER'S ...,'...',-... DEPARTMENT.,'/ ; APPOINTMENTS ANNOUNCED. WELLINGTON, June .18. Mr Coates announced to-day the following, appointments',to ;the Prime Department:— * . •Mr 0..A. Berendsen, LL.M., to the Imperial Affairs branclj. Mr R...MV Campbell, M.A., LL.B., to the secretarial staff of -the Prime Minister. It was also "announced that Mr O. A. Jeffery, who for many years; has been a member, of the Prime. Minister's secretarial staff, assumes . the position of chief secretary to the Prime Minister, recently vacated by Mr. F. D. Thomson, now permanent head of the Prime Minister's department., Mr Berendsen, who has been appointed to the Imperial Affairs branch of. the Prime Minister's department, is 36 years of age, and- is a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court. Be has acted as solicitor to : the Department of Labour, taking in the •Courts all the important cases brought by that . Department. In the examination for the degree, of Master of Laws, he took honours, inter alia, in the subject of international, law. On his return from active service s he Was appointed chief clerk and deputy registrar of Industrial Unions in 1917. He has been in charge of the Department of Labour on many occasions during the absence of the permanent head. He is familiar with all aspects o.f; industrial law, and .the industrial .conditions of the Dominion. It has been part of- his*duty to deal with all correspondence connected with the International Labour Office, of the League of Nations.. Ho joined the Publio Service in 1906. ■ Mr Campbell, who has been appointed private secretary, in the Prime Minister's Office, was born, at Maungatapere, North Auckland, and educated at Whangarei High School.. He is "28 years of age. He- joined the Educa-' tion Department '., some . twelve years ago, arid at present he occupies the Jiosition,.of statistical- clerk. He graduated LL.B: at Viotoria University College in 1923, and also obtained, the degree of Master of Arts in 1925, the latter with .first-class honours in economics. This, year he was awarded the Jacob Joseph Research Scholarship in economics. He at present occupies the position of president of the Victoria College Students' Association, and is chairman of the College Debating Society. ~ . .
