CANTERBURY MARKETS.

(S,r OUJI COMMWdM. IDITOX.) Friday Evening. The potato continues to claim all attention, in the local raarkot at present, other linos being soldoin spoken about. Last weok was characterised by great fluctuation in fckvß, and this week fluctuation has contlnuod, although not to the same extent. On Wednesday for instance potawes wore quotod at £6 f.ob. Lyttolt'm, when some good piivcols were sold. On Thursday business became quiet, but to-day furthor parcels woro sold a. £6 10s f.O.b. Lyttplton, and in somo eases as mucn tie £7 was aakod. Tho market continues to elwngo from hour to hour, and no doubt to-morrow the position will again b different. Sydney is still enquiring for potatoes, lut recent letters frun that centre would seem to strike a dotires* ng note, jet in tho face of this cables como to-hand indicating a different position. Last night tho Karetu sailed from Lyttelton with about .35,000 sacks on board, cargo having been shipped at Oamaru, Tiwaru, and Lyttolton, some 13,000 sacks loaving the last-named port. On tho various vessels whicl) have left the South Island for Sydney this season, it is estimated that about (54,000 sacks havo been shipped altogether. Tho opinion is expressed that it would have boon bettor for business had only half the quantity of potatoos shipped by the Karetu boon consigned, the balanco going by another vessel in a week's time, the reason being that the fact that 25,000 sacks arriving on tho market, is inclined to weaken it. On tho other hand it is statod that the quantity of potatoes that has so far boen shipped away is not so great sa it would appear when the sistO of the crop is taken into consider»fcien, Tho position at present is that a fight has developed between oversellers and over-buyers, and there is as much paper business being.done as was the case in 1923, the year of the floods, when practically everybody was speculating in potatoes. The price to farmers on truoks at country stations is £5 for June dolivery, and from 10s to lss wore for. July. Farmers are. inclined' to keep their stocks for the lattor delivery. Auckland is not wanting potatoes at present, apparently having sufficient en hand for immediate requirement*. It is expected that the Waihora which in to sail for Sydney about tho end of the present month, will not take more tnan half the quantity of potatoes that was shipped by the Karetu. "' with regard to wheat, millers' stocks are tunning down, although they still have enough op band to keep them going in the meantime. Farmers, however, are demanding higher prices than are likely to be paid while the millers are in th,«}r present frame of raißdi and consequently no business is being done," Partridge peas—The trade,on these is now practically finished, and tl»e bulk of the crop has been shipped away.
