LEGISLATORS WHOSE WORK IS DONE. (SPECIAL TO THE THESS.) WELLINGTON, June IS. References to legislators who had passed away since Parliament adjourned last rear were made in the House of Representatives to-day, and in every instance, on the motion of tho Prime Minister; a resolution was passed recording the distinguished services ren-de.-'d bv the deceased, and'sympathising with the relatives in their bercavemeilt' Hon. Mr T. W. Hislop. Mr Coatcs referred to the.late Ml- T. W. Hisiop as .an advanced thinker, a man who thought ahead of the time no lived in. fie mentioned that during tne period of his stay in Parliament Mr Hislop introduced Labour Bills, factoij and shop flours legislation, and a truck Act, which though thrown out at the time, were all passed later on. Ho was always well informed. ne was of a kindly nature, and the friends of his youth were still friends m Ins later vears. That was a tlung jvhicli marked the kind of man ho was. Lveryone regretted that he had gone. Mr Holland seconded the motion. I s knew the late hon. gentleman well, and .'in reading the history of the Dominion he was struck with his various attempts at social legislation, the Lahour Party remembered with gratitude tho fact that when Mr Keir Hardic a prominent British politician, and the tirst straight out Labou'r membci o the United Kingdom, enmc to New Zealand and was assailed by the newspapers, Mr Hislop, as Mayor gave him a civic reception, and made him his own guest. This was at a time when it was almost as much as a man s reputation fras worth to be associated with Mr Keir 'Hardie. Mr ■E. P. . Lee said he had .known Mr Hislop in Oamaru,. where he had "taken a keeu interest in public and civic affairs. He had done good work in the interests of the people, silently and often. Ho was a very sincere friend to those in .trouble. He ; was a quiet hut sincere man, whose word was his bond. Sir John Luke referred to the good work Mr Hislop had accomplished in municipal affairs in the capital. He was one of the first purchasers of a motor-car in New Zealand, and one day he had taken Mr Keir Hanlie out m it and had deposited him on bank. It was "a very near squeak" for Mr Keir Hardie Sir John also referred To the good work the. first. Mrs Hislop- had accomplished as Mayoress m Wellington. Hon. Mr T. McGibbon. In moving the usual formal motion •in regard to the death of .Mr McGibbon the Prime' Minister said he was a iuan who kuew'only straight dealiug, and he was respected by all who knew him. He was rot a man who sought the limelight, hut he performed his work successfully and silently. . , Mr H, E. Hcilland, the Hon. Mr Anderson, and Mr Horn, added their tributes. Mr Anderson said the late Mr M.c Gibbon had beep connected with public' movements during the greater •part of. his-lifetime. Ho was a man thoroughly respected by the community. The people of his own district had welcomed his appointment to the Legislative Council.
