ASHBURTON. Dixieland. Dixieland was very well attended on Wednesday evening, there being about •300 people present. The Council of the Ashburton Chamber of Commerce, met this evening, when the president (Mr A. A. McDonald) presided over a good attendance. The District Railway Traffic Manager (Mr H. Chapman); wrote stilting that the matter of bringing Ashburton under a 50 or oo mile radius rate of Christchurch had been submitted to Wellington for' consideration, and a definite reply would be sent at an early date. With reference to the Chamber's advocation of a parcels delivery in Ashburton, the railway business agent for Canterbury (Mr C. Pawson) wrote stating that the whole,system of parcels traffic was under review, and. as any system that might in the meantime be Introduced, at Ashburton was affected by the proposals, it had been decided to let the matter lie in abeyance in the meantime. The Chamber, would be advised as soon as the system to be. adopted was agreed upon. The president'of the Canterbury Industrial Association (Mr E. H. Marriner) advised that he would give an address in Ashburton on July Ist on "The Relation, of the Secondary to the Primary Industries." ■ . Mr A. Raven, chairman of the Retailers' Committee, reported, that the ques-tion-of a universal day for discounts on. accounts had been investigated, and. retailers were of opinion that the idea' was a good one.
