TIMBER MILLS.

LICENSES INVALIDATED. REPRESENTATIONS TO PRIME MINISTER. (special to "THE PEESS.") GREYMOUTH, May 5. A largely attended meeting of sawmillers of the Westland, Buller, and lnangahua districts was held to-day to .consider the effect of the judgment 'delivered by the. Full Court last week in the case, the. Kinu v. Cartel. The ' judgment incidentally invalidates all • utuuer-cuttiug licenses granted by the warden in this district for the past 2o , rears. Believing that the titles granted them by the warden, as the representative oi the Crown, were good, • the millers have invested capital, amounting to not less than £jOU,OOU, , upon the areas comprised in these titles and have, in addition to royalties on timber cut, paid annual rentals at the .' rate of one shilling per acre, approxi- , mating £3500. The local bodies receiving revenue from these areas are also ■ seriously affected, and this further • affects millers as large ratepayers. The meeting passed the following resolution: —"That representation be made to the Prime .Minister 'and to the ' Minister for Lands and Mines, with a • riaiv to obtaining validation of sawmill , licenses and certificates of reservations , granted by the warden under the Mining; Act as representative of the Mines and Lands Departments, and that having regard to the magnitude ( of the interests involved, the Ministers concerned be asked to meet the sawmill licensees and representatives of the . Grey. Tnanorah.ua, Buller, Westland, and Muichison Counties at. Greymoufcb as ' Boon as possible." .V renort of the meeting was tele- • pry plied-to the Prime Minister, Ministor for Lands,;and Minister for Mines.
