Captain Wilkins and Pilot Eiolson have decided to use the smaller 'plane, Alaskan, to seek land in the Polar seas. After an overhaul, they will return to Point Barrow and hop off when the weather permits. Captain Wilkins said: "We will have enough gasoline for 12 hours over the ioefieldß and will return to Fairbanks. The Alaskan can cover 100 miles an hour." TALE OF SUFFERING. (AVSTBALtAff AMD *.«. OABIJS AOSOOtttIOH.) FAIRBANKS, May 2. Later details of Malcolm Smith's overland journey to Point Barrow show that the party suffered severe hardships owing to the intense cold and the shortness of food. Of the G8 dogs with, which they started, only 16 were* alive on reaching Point Barrow. Many died of hunger and the others were so weak that they were shot to end thoir misery. In view of the difficulties so far encountered, Captain Wilkins is considering reorganisation of arrangements for conveying stores to his base and the carrying out of general plans for the expedition.
