Butler contributes an article to the "Timber Trades Journal," in which he explains and defends the principle of Associations of sawmilling groups in New Zealand. He explains that although far-reaching measures hare been introduced, a wholesome check has been provided by the Federation against legislation of an extreme character that might otherwise have reached the Statute Book. "At the preient time the Federation is much exercised about the rapid increase in the importation of timber from the West Coast of Canada and America. In the case of Douglas fir it is sold at prices against which the New Zealand sawmiller cannot posibly compete, owing to the heavy increase of timber royalties, a reeent increase in timber railway freights, and the Ugh wages paid to timber workers. The Federation will bo doubt seek to put a farther import duty an this timber."-

butter market.

SALES TO AUSTRALIA. (special 10 "TUB PSSBS.") GISBORNE, April 30. The dairy 'factories in the Poverty Bay district have not as yet sold a great deal of their butter owing to the fact that tho prices in England have been unsatisfactory ever since the beginning of the year. One company at least has sold none of its butter, and the storage charges naturally are mounting ud each weok. There will have to be a considerable riso in price for suppliers to net anything like the price they h»ve received for their butter-fat during th® past few seasons. A new departure so far as this district is concerned, is the salo of som« of the butter to Australia. The season there has been even worse than that experienced through parts of New Zealand, with the result that there is now an acute shortage of supplies. Agents are operating in New Zealand, and already have purchased a considerable I quantity of our butter. The Okito Co. I has just sold a parcel to one of theso buyers, and this will find its way to Melbourne in the near future. The Australian market is not, of course, one that can be looked to as a potential source of demand in normal seasons, but at present it is offering a splendid outlet for some of our butter, at prices which are very much higher than tho London parity. It is stated that some of the parcels have been sold at Is 6Jd f.0.b., a very satisfactory figure considering the season.
