TURF GOSSIP. Nominations for the AVanganui Jockey Club'a Winter Meeting closo on Ulottday, May Brd. Acceptances for the Amber ley Racing dub's Annual Meoting, to be held on tho Riccarton course, close on 'Wednesday next, May sth, at 8 p.id. Ono of the most attractive performances at the South Canterbury Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting was registered by Mr G. Murray-Aynsley's filly, Aanse«, who won the May Stakes on the second day's programmes. She was tho last of the eleveh starters to move from the bnrrier rise, and hor many supporters resigned themselves to the fact thftb their chance of collecting a diviflent was of the remotest order. When heads were turned tor home, however, the daughter of Paladin showed a remarkable burst of speed, and finishing oh tho outsid© of the field, won with a lot in hand. Zariseo is a handsome tyi)6 of thoroughbred and when more seasoned is likely to bo heard of in more important events. 11. Deeloy, who was recently granted i rider's license bv the Auckland Metropolitan body, made his reappearance at tho Whattgarei Meefing last week, when ho rode Dress Circle, whom he ushered into fourth position in the Portland Welter Handicap. The gallery present would have liked to see tho finished horseman occupy the front row, but all would probably hope that, before the curtain is rung down on the present ttoason, he will rido a winner ot two.

Owing to respiratory ailmonts, Muri}iatipo was to be relegated to the paddock after the South Canterbury Meeting, but the Sunny Lako gelding concluded his racing career by breaking his leg in the Smithfield Handicap on the first day of the fixture. F. D. Joties has certft'nly had his share of misfortune In losing tlie services of horses in training, as, in addition to MuHhaupo, Euripos, Dionysius, Phninf)S. and Ballymena. all came to an uiitlHiely end bjr similar mishaps. It. Alexander had Philanderer in excellent condition for the Timaru Meoting, and it was very unfortunate for the Riccarton mentor that the Gay Lad geluihg broke down when In a prominent position at the entrance to the straight in the Rosewill Hack Handicap oil the first day. The ailment, although not 6f a serious nature, will necessitate Alexander giving Philanderer a respite from active wotk. Splendid nominations have been refor th« North Canterbury Racing Club's Autumn Meeting, to be held nt Rangiora on Saturday, May 15th. TfiO taiti has greatly benefited the grounds gnd track, and there is etery promise of a inost Successful githermg.

»nd t&a pttt>ho were Hot slow in Showing their approval. Proud Ata showed a return to form and won tho Si* Clair Handicap is a oonvinoing manner, while there wta a lot of merit in the success o£ Jolly Pet, who won the Domain Handicap. The day' 6 racing opened with the Bayfleid Handicap, and it was rather a better contest than is usually provided by hortes engaged in slow cias3 unhop pled trotters' races The America,n-bred Guy l'arnsh was favour ito with Hawkesbury's Pride, Fairlight, Kerrwood Bell, and Jock Bwgon also receiving solid '•upport. Guy Parri6h began well, and aiaieted by a good passage, was soon amongst the leaders Going down the back the last time, the eon of Guy Axworthy and Margaret Parrish put in a woHsustained ruo and onteral the straight just behind HawUesbury's Pr:de. The last-named broke, and in a fine finish Guy Parrish defeated Fairlight by a length with Some Jazz two lengths away third, Hawkesbury's Prido was fourth and Randolph fifth in front of a strung out field. The winnor, Guy Parrish, lias not long been in work, having recently don»s a season at the stud. He found the going to his liking and trotted a solid race from start to finish. Fairlight did not receive a good passage, fiad he been lucky in t)ii« respect he would probably have won, a3 he was trotting faster thart anything elso at the finish. Some Jazz came from a long way back and beat all but Guy Parrish and Fairlight. Hawkesbury's Pride, who finished fcurth, did not trot as evenly as some of ihe others, but showed up sufficiently well to sugj*pst that she will do better in (ho near future.

Jolly Pet, a fou>yeaj-old gelding !>y Coldstream Bells from Jolly Girl, registered a smart performance by winning tlio Domain Handicap from twenty-eight others and paid a useful dividend. tie gave all his opponents a start and had the result in safe keeping a hundred yards from home, while he went JJsec better than his handicap. His Pal paced his best race to date but was always held safe by the winner. J. D. Smith's pair, Jolly Roger and Avenger, finished third and fourth respectively, with Locabda Child, St. Thomas, and Stockade Jun. at the head of the others. The favourite Ivor broke at the end of five furlonge, while Tennessee's Child and Nihilist Junr, two horses that were well backed, made poor showings. Robert .bell twisted a shoe to the preliminary. TherO was some delay in fixing it up, with the result that he was lato in going Out again, Arid under instructions from the stewards was not allowed to take part in the race. Kanuknot, Carbon, Lefttonhor, Tarza.ii, and Bhitie Soon declined their engagements in the Boach Handioap, leaving nineteen starters. Daphne Wildwood and Macaranda monopolised the betting, being first and second favourite respectively, and together they carried almost one-third of tho money op the machine. It wa« a poor race and resulted in a vrin for Bismuraie, who led from start to finish, but had to bo ridden out. Edwin Harwin paood a fihe race and despite interference going out of the straight the first time, beat all but the winner. After beginning slowly, Daphne Wildwood finished fast in third place, followed by Maiwliariti and Macararida. Van Director was prominent for six furlongs, whore he tired and finished in the ruck. Bing Boy and Lady Embrace failed to go away. The rest of the field made a poor showing and raced a long way below their best. Underview«r and Avalanche wero tho only soratchinge in the Innovation Handicap, leaving a mixed field of eleven unhoppled trotters to face the starter. The favourite, Real The Great, broke at the start and never settled down to bis work, while Elusivej Somo Jazz, and Sv.-iftbine did likewise Mid made a very poor showing. Tim Wood from scratch began in good style, and making every post a winning one, lasted long enough to score by half a length and registered his first win since ho left L. F. Borkertt'a btable. The winnor is a useful trottec. He is owned and trained by W. T. Lowe, who has been very successful of recent years with the unhoppled trotters. Happy Rosa showed more speed than anything elße in the race, but was unable to control it. She made three mistakes ancl the ground she lost cost her tho race. Randolph looked a winnet two furlongs from home, where he broke. Tho journey troubled Queen Ida, Nourmahal, and Engagement, while Darkest , who usually races well at Forbury Park, was never prominent. The principal race on the oard, the Prince of Wales Handicap, attracted ten starters. Kohara waa favourite, carrying 1000 tickets more than Native Chief, who was next in deth&nd with Dillon Wilkes and Harbour Light the best backed of the others. Native Chief and Fushion Queen broke at the Btart, the former losing funs' fifty yfwds before he struck hie gait, but Fashion Queen failed to Settle dowrl and took ho part in the raoe. Harold Burwood immediately took Up the running from Kohara, Eeoort, Dillon Wilkes, Talent, Harbour Light, Becky Logan, and Queen's Own with Native Chief trailing the field. There was little ohange in the order until entering the last circuit, when the field closed up. Harold Btirwood was still ih charge as the field entered the back straight. At this stage Native Chief put in a brilliant ran whioh carried him from last to first, and amidst great excitement he went on to win by three lehgtfis from Kohata With Dillbn Wilkes a similar distance away third. Becky Lo£an was fourth and Escort fifth. The winner's performance waa a remarkable one as he lest eo much ground at the start that his. task looked a hopeless one. In the concluding stages of the race he displaced suoh a tir6 tttrn of Speed that ho made tho Opposition l<x>k poor. This stamps the three-quarter brother to Logan Chief a« the best thf-ee-year-old seen in the Dominion. Kohara had every chance, ans although beaten, was not disgraced. Neither was Dillon Wilkes, who finished third. Becky Logan did not show the same dash as at Ashburton, while the display of Escort was disappointing and suggested that he is on the down grade. Queen's Own and Talent were prominent for threo parts of the journey. Harbour Light wont a bad race and pulled up without completing tho journey, and Harold Burwood was outclassed.

There were pins stirtera is th 6 St. Olair Handicap. The North Island owned ajid trained Petytwab was a efcrong favourite, but although he ttotted a Aouhd rice, hb «mld otily finish fourth. Proud At ft {torn '24 yds bhd was quickly into Ilia stride, and after racing in tkird petition for five furlongs, Wstimed the le&d whioh he fnaihtained and won comfortably from the back-marker Bonny Spec, who is very well at present. Money Spidet made up miSat of his hinditiajb in the first mile, at whioh stage he looked a winner, but owing to his driver being too anxious, was beaten into third place. Mefrjr Bingen showed up Well for ten furloligs. Mangoxitu broke up early and was hot driven out, while the reßt of the field trotted a long way below their beat. The Renotvrf Handicap Wis an intefefetirig race and fesulted in a toih for the Timaruowned and trained Bing Boy, who after beginning slowly, gradually made up his handicap, and in u close finish gained the verdict by a narrow margin over Potir Bells. The tarinet, Bing BoJ, paced a fine race at Adhbuttan last Saturday but his erratio behaviour at the nt&rt is not in his favour, which was no doubt responsible for _ the substantial dividend he paid. Four Sells went a fine race and was unlucky in meeting the winner on his best behaviour. EHtfcliglit finished ftuit ofl the outside of the field and gained third money but looked as if he left bio effort rather late. Outside the placed horse!!, William the Great, Mountain Chimes, and Guy Fawkea made the best showing. Moor Chimes, who was well backed, and Golden Devon did not leave the mark.

J. J. Kentiorley scotad hi* eeoond #in for the day in the Flying Handicap with Peter Bihgem, a brother to Great Bingen. The son of Nehion Bingen and Sertha Belle began well and raced in fotirth position until the turn for home, where he put in his olaim ahd won nioely from Ivy Audiiboh, who was always weU placed. Whawpiana made the running for six furlongs when she gradually dropped hack ami finished third with Tommy Direct fourth. The winner, Peter Bingen, was a waita favourite and paid a short price.
