NORTH CANTERBURY.

RANGIORA. The auuual meeting oi the Croqi:et section of the F.angiora Bowling, 1 enr.is, and Croquet Club nas held last night. The president, Mrs W. E. Barton,, occupied the chair, Tlic report stated that the season had been a very busy one. The Club championships were well contested, good entries - being received for both doubles and singles. The doubles championship was won by Mesdames H. MChappell and W. Dickson. Miss GibbsJordan was the singles champion. The president's prizes for a break competition in two grades, was won by Miss Gibbs-Jordan in the senior grade, and Mesdames Tweedie and Linsette in the junior grade. For sealed handicaps in two grades, the winners were:—Mrs W. Dickson, senior, and Mesdames R. Banfteld and I. K. Logan, juniors. Rangiora won the croquet match against Kaiapoi in the Mcintosh shields competition. The card socials during the winter had been most successful, and_ the sum of £l4 10s 7d had been raised, and'handed to the general committee, towards the cost of the new croquet lawns. Officers were elected as follows: — President, Mrs W. E. Barton; lion, sec., Mrs D. Blake;. committee: Mesdames 0. I. Jennings, W. McKenzie, G. GibbsJordan, G. Dickson, and R. J. WAIKARI. The Waikari Branch of the AVaipara. County Plunket Society-held its annual mooting on Thursday last, Mis B. L. Blunden presiding over a good attendance. -The report and balance-sheet were read and adopted.' The receipts amounted to £73 7s-6<J and the expenditure £4l Is 3d, leaving a credit balance ol' £32 6s 3d, which was very satisfactory for'the first year. The secretary reported that the work of the society was steadily increasing and thanks were duo to Nurso Walker who so efficiently carried out her duties. The total number of visits paid by adults and babies to the Plunket room.was §-13, and-those paid to babies in jbheir homes 249. During the year a garden party, and a sa.le ot' work were held and these realised a net profit of. £37,■ A great loss sustained through! the death of Dr. C. J. Campbell, who. always took an active part in tho welfare of the. society.. AKAROA. The summer weather came to an end on Thursday night, . when rain , began from the south-east, continuing all ;day Friday. The Akaroa Croquet Club, had been taking advantage of the recent fine weather to complete their tournaments in the handicap singles. In the final game Mrs W. M. Buddie 2 bisques defeated Miss E. Jacobson scratch. On Tuesday both lawns were fully- occupied most of ; the day in playing off for trophies presented by Mrs T. E. McKenzie. The winners were:-On lawn A: Mrs S. W.' Hayward 59, and Mrs A. H. Williams, runner-up, 55. Lawn .R: Mrs A. V. Lelievre 38, and Mts H. Harrington 36. .The election of twoymembers to-fill the vacant seats on the' Akaroa and Wainui Road Board resulted in Messrs Jos. Hayward and S. J. Vogan being returned unopposed. Messrs W. G. Dalglish and A. A. McPhail were likewise elected unopposed for the Le Bons Ro;*l Board.

A special meeting o£ the Akaroa Borough Council ~ was beld to consider matters in connexion with .-the staff. There were present: The Mayor (Mr Geo. Armstrong), Crs. H. J. Barnham, T.'.Masefield,-E. G. McNabb, C. S.'Parnham, C. Stewart, and W. W. 'Williams. The Council went into committee. At the conclusion of the meeting it stated there was nothing for publication. A farewell social was tendered by the choir of the Presbyterian Chnrch recently to Miss E. S. Petrie, who is shortly leaving the Akaroa school for Christchnrch. On Thursday afternoon, in the Tai Tapu Town Ilall, Miss Cooper, organising secretary of the British and Foreign Bible Society, addressed a re--presentative gathering of collectors and subscribers. Hie' lecturer) advanced the opinion that the fear of' impending conflict' among' the nations; of the' Pacific in the near, .future was; unfounded,; anil that future ' trouble' could be avoided by the setting up of 80ine form of international government by Pacific Powers while good relationships prevailed. At the next meeting a course of study in psychology will be commenced under the tutorship of Mr H. Money. Death was certified to be due to heart failure.
