HOURS OF WORK.
CONFERENCE WANTED. REQUEST TO MR BRUCE. (ET CABLE— ?RESS ASSOCIATION—COPTBI&HT.) (acstbaliax and x.z. cable association.) SIDNEY, April SO. Mr J. S. Garden,-acting on behalf of the unions covered by Federal awards, telegraphed Mr Bruce requesting him to convene a compulsory conference to consider the 44-hours question. He "also telegraphed the Labour Councils of the Commonwealth asking their co-operation. Mr Myhill, secretary, of tbo Metal Trades', Employers' Association, states that representatives of men employed by the Pioneer Spring Company " notified the management that the men were prepared to work the 4s-hoiirs' week. Subsequently, Mr Bryant, of the Australian Society of -Engineers, of which the majority of the men. are members, informed the management that the men were not allowed to work more than 44 hours, but could work Monday to Saturday inclusive, as the union was not bound to observe' the five-days.' week. Mr Myhill declared that the Association believed that the men, if they had their own way, would obey the law. They were being led, however, by a ■few extremists.
