NORTH CANTERBURY.

EANGIOBA. At a meeting of the managers of John Knox Church, held on Tuesday evening, it was .reported, that over £IOO was netted at the flower show and luncheon held recently. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to-the orchestra for its services, together with a donation of £1 Is to its funds. A vote of thanks was also accorded to Mr W. R. Pike for assistance, and to all others who helped to make the function a success. It was also reported that Mr 0. Leech had presented the church with a quarter acre section in the Coldstream ward for Sunday school purposes at some future date, and had agreed to lease the managers a building 6n his property, now used as a Sunday schoolroom for five years at a peppercorn rental. A very hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Mr Le'ech for his generosity, and for the interest he had taken in the establishment of, the Sunday school in the Coldstream district. OXFORD. There was a large assembly of their friends in the Coronation Hall for a "novelty evening" in honour of Mr G. Rossiter and Miss E. Cederman, who are shortly to be married. Mr T. W. i'eatherstoue presided, and there were present representatives of the various organisations to which one or both of the guests had been associated, namely, Brass Band, Methodist Church, Choir, and Bib!o Class. Vocal and instrumental nums were given, and a competition was won by Mrs Grace and .vliss Miriam Watson. Short congratulatory addresses were given. On behalf of the Baud, Mr A. Baxter, chairman of the Band Committee, presented Mr Rossiter with a tea service, and on behalf of the Bible Class, Mr J. Woodfield presented the guests with a rose bowl. Mr j Featherstone, on behalf of others, made presentations of a varied character. A very pleasant evening was concluded with supper. On Sunday morning last, at St. Columba Presbyterian Church, at the close of tho Sunday School, an opportunity was taken to bid farewell to one of the teachers, Miss Eunice Cederman, who is leaving to .be married. The Superintendent • thanked Miss Cederman for the valuable services she had rendered and called on Miss Daphne Pachnatz to present her with a case of afternoon tea spoons, forks, bread-fork, and sugar-tongs, wishing her all good wishes. Miss Cederman suitably replied. After evening service a social hour was spent, and a presentation of a silver teapot, suitably inscribed, was made to Miss Cederman by Miss Kerr on behalf of the congregation, in recognition of her good work as organist. Mr George Rossiter returned thanks •for Miss Cederman. Supper was provided by the ladies of the C&urch. MOTUKARARA. A very enjoyable function was celebrated recently, at Motukarara, when the ladies arranged the opening dance of the Waihora Football Club. The hall was tastefully decorated with the football colours, and the local music supplied was thoroughly enjoyed. Mr C Miller carried out the duties of M.C. • very efficiently. At the close of the evening Mr Geo, Templeton, the footballer's secretary, thanked the ladies for their effort, stating that the function had been resultant in placing the club on a very good financial basis.

CHEVIOT. A meeting of the committee of the Cheviot Collio Club was held recently, tlje President, Mr A. Gillanders, presiding over a good attendance. Special prizes were allotted, as follows, these boing additional to those already published:—Mr N. Eutherford's special, of £lO to Class 3, Mr C. White's special of £2 2a, to unplaced competitor gaining most points: Messrs Maling and Co's special £1 Is to winner of Class 2; Mr B. Sloss's special £2 2s, to maiden dog scoring most points in Class 2; Frew Bros.' special to winner of Class 1; New Zealand Farmers' Co-op., Ltd.'s special £1 Is to maiden dog scoring most points in Class 1; Dalgety and Co., Ltd.'s special £2 2s to maiden dog scoring most points in Class 3; N.Z. Farmers' Co-op., Ltd.'s special £l»ls to dog under best command at the meeting, in the Judge's opinion; Mr Sheffield's trophy to dog scoring most points in Classes 1, 2, and 3j for dogs owned north of the Waiau river; Mr T. "White's trophy to Class 4. New members were elected as follows: Messrs L. Wearne, E. Honeybonc, A. E. Moor. It was decided that the Croquet Club make all arrangements and supply all the necessaries for the catering. At the monthly meeting of the Knox Presbyterian Church Ladies' Guild, Mrs E. Swinord presided over a good attendance. After the formal business had been completed, a gift social was held and a pleasant time was spent with competitions and musical items. Mrs Williamson and Mrs Upston were the winners of the competitions. Items were contributed by Mrs F. Flute and Mrs R. Noonan. Mesdames D. Fraser and J. Williams were hostesses for the afternoon.

Tho local banner competition was continued on Saturday when Spotswood met Mackenzie on the Show grounds, under summery weather conditions, and fair attendance of spectators. The game resulted in an easy win for Spotswood by 21 points to 6. Tries were scored for Spotswood by N. Wilkinson, C. Barnes (4), and Albert Barnes and C. Barnes converted three. Flaherty scored a try for Mackenzie and Keir kicked a penalty. Mr W. A. Macfarlano was Toferee on Saturday. A match will be played on the show grounds between the probable Senior and Junior teams. Tho teams to meet Culverden in the first match of the Sub-Union competition, will be selected after the match on Saturday. The hon. secretary of the Cheviot branch of the Farmers' Union, has been advised that tho farm school is to be held at Cheviot on Friday and Saturday, May 14th and loth. A" successful dance under tho management of the Cheviot Football Club's social committee, was held in the Public Hall, when there was a good attendance. Music for dancing was supplied by Mr C. H. Davies. The annual meeting of parishioners of St. John's Church, Cheviot, was held in the Cheviot Public Hall, recently, the vicar (the Rev. G. Widdup) presiding over a good attendance. The vicar presented the annual report/ which dealt with the various organisations connected with the church, makinp special reference to the formation ant successful .work of the Ladies' Guild, the reopening of the Sunday school, anc the anniversary festival, also the series of inter-congregational visits whici had proved very successful in stimulate ing interest in the work of the church. He expressed his sincere thanks to al who had assisted to carry on the wore of the chnrch. The report was adopted. The treasurer presented the churclwarden's balance-sheet, which showed a very satisfactory position, there being no outstanding accounts and a small credit balance in hand, a position which was largely due to the work cf the Ladies' Guild. S. Wilson, P. Childs, D. D. Bailey, G. D. McDonald, and E. C. Webb. Mr F. 11. Berg was re-elected auditor. < The proposed budget for the coming year was referred to the vestry for consideration.. .It wag unanimously agreed that the envelope system remain in force. It was decided that in order to commemorate the 2oth anniversary of the consecration of St. John's Church a special effort be made to clear off the loans. WAIKARI. A well-attended meeting of residents was held in the Council Chambers on Tuesday evening, Mr W. T. Lindsay presiding. The meeting was called for the purpose of arranging for the building of a new hall. Mr H. Saundercock produced a plan of a concreto building capable of seating 350 people, with a cloak room and library attached, estimated to cost' £3OOO. The meeting yvas a most enthusiastic one, many voicing the opinion • that it. was quite time i new hall was erected in the township. The following committee were elected to go fully into the matter, and report fully to a meeting to be held at a subsequent date: —Messrs H. M. Anderson, 9. O. Arres, H. Sauiidercock, A. Black, ind W. W. Mcßac. It was suggested that a special rating area bo formed, consisting of the Waikari school area, [or the purpose of raising a loan, such rating area to provide interest and sinking fund on a loan of £2OOO. Other means of raising the required amount were also discussed, and it was finally agreed that the committee circularise the ratepayers in this area, to see if they were willing to bo rated for this purpose. It was also agreed that the Postmaster-General bo requested to reinstate the amount on this year's estimates for tho erection of the Waikari Post Office. Tho section had been purchased for several years, but owing to the financial stringency the residents had agreed that the building of this office bo held over until normal conditions were again reached.

BALCAIRN. The annual general meeting to elect a library committee for the ensuing year was held in the school —Mr Hobbs presiding over a fair attendance. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £l(s 7s 2d. The chairman thanked the secretary and the librarian for the | good services they had rendered to the library during the past year. The election of a new. committee resulted in the following ■ being elected: —Mesdames Brown, Gorrie, Hobbs, Miss Park (secretary), and Messrs Hobbs (chairman) and Wimsett (librarian). A meeting of the committee was held afterwards. Tho secretary reported having received tho sum of £ll 7s 2d, being Government subsidy for 1925. It was decided to purchase an additional library case, and the sum of £lO is to be spent in the purchase of new books. The annual meeting of householders and the election cf a School Committee for the ensuing year were held in the school on Monday night. Mr J. Fitzpatrick presided over a fair attendance. The chairman referred to the work done during the past year by the outgoing committee. New flooring had been put down in a Dart of the school and other repairs had been effected. The water supply had over been a source of trouble, and he considered that it was time an electric pump was installed and the water laid on to the master's residence. The school, excursion trip fo Diamond Harbour had been a great success. Every child in the school had

received' a prize book at the end of the year, and a smn of £5 Is 6d tad been spent on the school , library. The financial, statement showed a credit balance of £l3 4s 9d, which was most satisfactory. A vote of thanks was passed to the outgoing committee .for' the useful work performed by them during-their term , of office. Regret was expressed at Mr Fitzpatrick's decision not to seek re-election. . Mr Fitzpatrick has served, on the Balcairn School Committee for 23 years, and was also chairman of the Marshland School Comnutee for six years. The election of a new committee resulted as follows :—Messrs Habgood (chairman), Hurley, Hobbs, Dermott, and Hammond. ASHLEY BANK. At a meeting of the AslUey Tennis Club, held in the school,; there was a very good attendance of members. It was decided to hold a carnival dance on Friday, May 21st, in aid of the club funds. The annual meeting of parishioners of St. Simon and St. Jude's Anglican Church was held after the evening service on Sunday. The Rev. H. F. Ault presided a good attendance. Before the election of officers for the ensuing year, the Rev. Ault thanked all for their-help and support .during the past year. On behalf of, the congregation lie expressed regret at tho departure of Mr and Mrs Owen and family from the district, and wished them every happiness in their new surroundings. Following are the newly-elected officers: Churchwardens, Messrs F. Bradsliaw and W. Stringer; vestry, Messrs J. A. Petrie, G. Holborongh, J. Goodrich. J. Wheeler, W. Drake, H. Ludemann, Misses J. Croft, A. Stringer, D. Schmidt, an 3 E. Bowbyes (hon. secretary). ' PREBBLETON. At a meeting of householders on Monday the question of the proposed school swimming baths was introduced by the chairman," Mr A. Macey, who expressed the opinion that .school baths were a very real necessity. He intimated the probability of a public j meeting being called in the near.future to consider ways and means of raising the necessary funds, and stated that the committee had already in hand a small nucleus for that purpose. An outbreak of mumps has been prevalent in the district for some weeks, and has had a detrimental effect on the school attendance. Visitors to the Exhibition who returned during the week include Mr ■T. W. Kingan and Mr and Mrs J. Mcintosh. At the Methodist Church on Sunday morning, opportunity was taken to make a small presentation to Miss Mabel Griffiths who has acted in the capacity of organist for a considerable period but who is now, owing' to h- j ,r removal from' Prebbleton, rehnqnisning that position. In asking Miss Griffiths to accept a leather music case from the congregation, Mr Sonthon conveyed to her their appreciation of her work for the church, and assured her that their affection and goodwill would follow her to her new home. OUHUHIA. At a progressive euchre party and dance, held in the school, there wa3 a. large crowd present, and a very enjoyable evening was The winners of the euchre prizes were Miss P. Dunlop and Mr H. Spencer. The music lor the dance was supplied by Mr P. Miller. During the evening the School Committee made a presentation to the caretaker Olrs'C. Chennerv). -The chairman (Mr A. J. Thompson). and

Mr H. McMillan spoke of the way in which Mrs Chennery had carried out her duties, saying that she had always done her work most satisfactorily. Mrs Chinnery has been caretaker ever since the school' was built Homo twelve years ago. A euchre match was played in> the school, Ouruhia versus Marshland. Some forty-eeght players took part in the game which resulted in a win for the visitors, the scores being Marshland 5i games, Ouruhia 44 games. After the card match supper was seired and the room was cleared for dancing. The music was supplied by Mr I. Miller. A return match with Marshland will be played on Thursday next.
