HEAVY RAINS.
WASHOUT ON OTIRA LINE. repair work abandoned till TO-DAY. (SFZCUI. 10 "Tin PRZ3S. ) GREYMOUTH, April 28. Heavy rains which fell last night and this morning caused a big washout between Kotukn and Moana, 21 miles 35 chains distant from Greymouth. The scour is seventeen feet long and fourteen feet deep. Repairs are being effected by a gang, under the charge of Mr F. H. Eggleton, permanent way inspector, but owing to heavy rain and inadequate light this evening, repair work was abandoned until daylight tomorrow.
Mr Eggleton telephoned the Greymouth Traffic Office this evening, at 9 o'clock, that it was still raining hard at the scene of the washout, and it was impossible to give any dofinite information as to whether repairs would be effected in time to allow the express trains to get through to-morrow. In the event of traffic not being restored arrangements will bo made to transfer passengers, light luggage, and perishable goods. A culvert on the main line, in the station yard at Moana, has also subsided. For the twenty hours ended at 9 a.m. to-day, the rainfall recorded at Greymouth was 76 points. Intermittent heavy showers fell until nine o'clock this evening, when tho weather cleared.
