NEW YORK. April 18.
One of the worst scandals in the history of the Pure-food Laws of this city has boeu disclosed, another month's investigation by the Health Department revealing that 800,000 gallons of adulterated milk havo been sold daily for years.
The investigatibn also showed that noarby municipalities were affected in a similar manner, Jersey City's supply being 21 per cent, adulterated, in many cases to such an extent as to be praotically water. Corruption existed in tho Health Department in Now York, it being disclosed that the department's inspectors were not trusted, and uniformod police in many instances were being used to test the milk.
The department's efforts to stop shipments of so-called "bootleg" milk into the city were frustrated when tlio railway employees were bribed by interested parties to hide impure supplies. Cream wbb found to be adulterated heavily with oils. A clique of blackmailers existed, levying tribute upon dishonest dealers under threats to reveal the conditions. Four men were now being held by the police,, and Grand Jury indiotonente were expected. One blackmailer confessed that he collected 100,000 dollars a year. The department's officials claimed that powerful foroes were working against them, incriminating evidence being stolen from the records room.
