PERSONAL. (firZCIAL TO "THX TBESS.'") GEEYMOUTH, April IS. Miss K. Whyte has returned to Timaru from a holiday visit to Westport. Misses Gableson (2), of Nelson, are on a holiday visit to Greymouth. Miss F. Symonds, who has been visiting Westport, has returned to Lyttelton. Miss Huddlestone, of Wanganui, is visiting relatives at Westport. Mrs M. McColl, of Melbourne, who has been visiting her son, Mr V. McColl, South Beach, left on her return yesterday. She was accompanied by Mr C. H. McColl. Mrs W. Blackman, accompanied by her sister, Mrs Holmes, left yesterday for Christchurch and Dunedin. Miss McKay, who has been spending annual holidays with her mother at Westport, left yesterday for Christchurch and Wellington. Nurse E. Eyan, who has been spending a holiday in Greymouth, returned yesterday to Christchurch. Mr Carl Klein, formerly of Hokitika, who has been revisiting the Coast after a long absence, left yesterday for Wellington. Captain and Mrs Angus left yesterday for Christchurch and Dunedin. Among' the outward passengers by yesterday's express were, Mesdames A. Martin, J. McLeod, Gardener, Misses K. Martin, K. Sheedy, Skelton, J. Purchas, Messrs J. Crcssey, Joyce, H. J. Norman, P. Pierson, E. J. Love, G. F. Gearey, R. Flewellyn, R. Steele, R. Gaidiuer, and Colonel Clayton. Mrs N. McAra,' of Oinoto, who underwent an operation at the Grey Hospital, on Friday morning, is making satisfactory progress ■ towards recovery. Mr F. H. Shipman, Public Works Department, left yesterday on a holiday trip to Auckland and Whangarei. Miss C. Young, of Sumner, who has been visiting Mrs O. McLean, returned to Christchurch yesterday. Mr E. Richmond returned from Nelson on Friday. Miss Dorothy McKonzie, who has been visiting friends in Greymouth, returned yesterday to Christchurch. Obituary. The death occurred at the Grey Hospital yesterday morning of Mrs Sarah Eooney, a native of Newry, Ireland, aged (il years. The late Mrs Eooney arrived in New Zealand at an early age, and for nearly forty years resided at Brunner, coming to Greymouth about five years ago. Her husband pre-deceas-ed her about two years ago. She leaves one daughter, Mrs W. Curtain, schoolmistress, (Kokiri, and three sons, Messrs John, Joseph, and Len Eooney (Greymouth). The death took place at her residence yesterday morning of Mrs Hannah Tindale, who had resided on the West Coast for the past 52 years, and was 80 years of age. The late Mrs Tindale had been ill for only a few weeks. Sho was a native of Geclong, Victoria, and resided for over 20 years at Dunganvillc, and for tho past 30 years in Greymouth. Sho is survived by her husband Mr John Tindale (sen.), three sons, Benjamin (Greymouth), John (Public Works Department, Punakaikai), Edward (Australia), and four daughters, Mesdames C. Gollop (Dunedin), G. Gill (Rimu), P. Waldie (Wellington), and Miss Alice Tindale. Tho death occurred at Upper Mouterc, Nelson, on Friday, of Mrs Benscmann, aged 52 years, after a short illness. The late Mrs Bensemann leaves a husband and two daughters. Mrs F. Knight and Mr W. Hart of Westport, brother and sister of deceased, left Westport yesterday for Nelson. Deserters from Warship. At a sitting of the Westport Magistrate 's Court on Friday evening, two deserters from H.M.S. Delhi wero remanded to appear before the Magistrate's Court, at Wellington, on Wednesday next. They left by the Komata yesterday, in custody, for Wellington. Grant for Bridge. , The Hon. G. J. Anderson, Minister for Mines, has notified the Hon. W. H. Mclntyre that Cabinet has approved of, and will provide on tho estimates, an item of £4OO for the Chasm Creek bridge, Seddonville. Buller Caledonian Society. The Buller Caledonian Society, at its monthly meeting, decided to extend an invitation to the Argyle and Sutherland Band, to a supper and dance in the Orango Hall, at the conclusion of their concert at Westport. Murchison Axemen's Association. At a meeting of the Murchison Axemen's Association, it was decided to hold a two days' meeting this year, June 2nd. and 3rd being the dates approved. A programme with prize money amounting to £2OO was adopted, the chief events of which will bo an upright chop and underhand chop each worth £6O to the winner with £lO and £5 for second and third respectively. Eegret was expressed at tho departure of the secretary, Mr C. E. Craig, from Murchison, and a bonus of £5 and a yote of thanks and appreciation for his services was accorded him. Westland Bacing Olub. At a committee meeting of the Westland Bacing Club the following members were present:—Messrs W. E. Williams (chairman), R. Adamson, A. W. Yarrall, J. Peakc, F. McGregor, C. J. Sellers, J. J. Mcintosh, M. Houston, H. A. Thompson, H. Butland, and D. J. Evans. The treasurer read the statement of accounts in connexion with the late race meeting, showing receipts £1444 7s 6d and expenses £1397 4s 6d. Satisfaction was expressed that the meeting had paid its way, a result which was very pleasing in'the circumstances. Grey Bar. The steamer Karori, coal and timber laden for Wellington, has been held up since yesterday owing to insufficiency of water on the Grey bar. The vessel is drawing seventeen feet two inches of water. The bar has shown unmistakeablo ovidence of silting for tho past twelve months, and the trouble has been responsible for a marked decrease in coal exports, through steamers being compelled to leave here with restricted cargoes. For the last week the bar has been as .smooth as the proverbial millpond. Golf. The Greymouth Golf Club opened its season at Omoto yesterday in dull but fine weather. Sinco last season the links have been greatly improved, and tho course was in splendid order. In declaring the season open tho president, Mr W. E. Reynolds, said that he trusted tho club would be favoured with fine weather during tho season. He also congratulated the club on the many improvements effected during the interval between the seasons. Fletcher, 75-17-58; junior: A. Baker and Mrs A. Baker, 105-18-87. In a week-end bogey match, McCarthy tied with McKeehnie, 2 down. Bairways and Public Works. Mr T. E. Y. Seddon, M.P., has received advice from the Miniiter for Railways that an increase to £SO in the grant by the Railway Department towards the cost of the deviation to provide access from Whall street to Smith street, promised by the Railway Board on its recent visit to Greymouth, has been confirmed. In reply to a request from the Borough of Kumara to have portion of the road from Kumara Junction to Kumara classified a Grade 1 road, the Minister for Public Works has advised Mr Seddon that the matter will receive consideration when the Estimates are being prepared. Champion Drummer. The medal for the best drummer at the Dunedin Band Contest has been awarded to J. Smith, Greymouth Municipal Band. Greymouth. Main School. At the final meeting of the Greymouth Main School Committee, before the forthcoming election, the balancesheet for the year ended February 28th, 1926, showed total receipts £553 4s 4d, while expenditure totalled £542 4s 4d, leaving a credit balance of £ll. The chairman explained that since February 28fh the committee had received a further grant of £57 from tho Canterbury Education Board, and that the present credit balance was £SO. He added that grants received from the Board would not suffice for the school's requirements, and if. the committee did not raise money from other sources it would soon be destitute. Debating Society. The annual meeting of the United Literary and Debating Society elected the following officers:—Patron, Mr P. J. McLean; president, Mr A. A. Adams; vice-presidents, Messrs J. B. Kent, J. P. McGrath, J. H. Price; committee, Messrs G. Turtill, J. Booth, D. M. Robertson, R. Spencer; secretary, Mr J. H. Price; treasurer, Mr A. Weaver; delegates to Competition Society, Messrs E. I. Lord, A. A. Adams, and J. Kent; teams' selectors, Messrs A. Adams, E. I. Lord; auditor, Mr J. W. Lord. The delegates to the Competitions Society reported that a sub-committee, composed of' one representative from each of the constituent clubs, have been appointed to arrange a series of functions to augment the Society's funds for the purpose of securing judges from Australia.
