DISCUSSION EVENING. On Saturday- the. Canterbury VFJniversity College" Engineering Stoteiety held: a discussion evening. ■•;. A ;ipaper was read which purported' to be a' county engineer's report tohis:.council. , Tho report submitted proposals. for a ' hydro-electric sceme, river utilisation and improvement; and sewage disposal. '• The wafer for "the hydro-electric scheme was obtained from-'tt lake and carried down to the power house 565 feet below, where two alternators generated at .3300 volts ■'■ straight;* to the transmission line. A township of 1200 inhabitants was supplied through 'an outdoor . sub-station, and 'a' farming' population of 800 in the olftlying districts was supplied by pole transform-. ers. The river, utilisation arid improvement scheme provided for the preliminary deepening of a, stream the size of the Avon by means of hydraulic sluices; the draining of a swamp 12,000 acres in ; area; the erection of a water tower, and tho beautifying of the banks of the stream wherd it flowed, through the town.. A conservancy scheme of sewage disposal known as the Rochdale system, was proposed. This would be self-supporting, and ■should show a profit, of about £IOO per annum. ... .
