PERSONAL. isrrciAi. to "the rsxss.") GRKYMOUTH, April 16. Miss K. Brown has resigned from the teaching staff of the Westport Technical School. The Rev. Knowles Smith, who has succeeded Rev. J. F. Jack, in charge of the Hokitika Methodist Church, accompanied by Mrs Knowles Smith, arrived last evening, and will take services on Sunday next. Mr A. J. Shaw, who succeeds Mr A. Aiken as manager of tho Hokitika, branch of the Bank of New Zealand at Hokitika, accompanied by Mrs Shaw, lias arrived from Nelson. Mr B. M. Davis lias resigned from the teaching staff of the Westport Technical School to take up an oppointment at the Wanganui Technical College. The application of Mr J. Nieholls has been recommended for the position vacated by Mr Davis. Mr J. Hosie, a former resident of Grey mouth, and now of Melbourne, is revisiting Greymouth. He is accompanied by Mrs Hosie. Mr J. Flaherty, 2nd engineer of the s.s. Waitemata, is seriously ill in the Duncdin Hospital. His mother, Mrs E. Flaherty, and sister, Miss S. Flaherty, of Cobden, loft yesterday for Dunedin. Mrs C. J. Webster, of Melbourne, who has been on a visit to her son, Mr J. Webster, will leave to-morrow morning for Christchurch, en route to Melbourne. Mr I. Patterson, of Eeefton, has returned from a visit to Dunedin. Mrs and Miss Hawkey and Mr T. O'Brien, Timaru, are the guests of Mrs M. Waddell (Reefton). Golf. At a meeting of the Westport Ladies' Golf Club, officials were elected 'as follows:—Captain, Mrs Bird; secretary, Miss M. Harkness; committee, Mesdames Slee, Foote, and Miss Findlay. Buller Schools' Excursion. Approximately forty names have been given in of town and country pupils who intend to make the excursion from the Buller district to tho Duncdin Exhibition. This number may be added to at a meeting this evening? at which it is hoped to have a complete tally of the intending excursionists. Farmers' Union. The quarterly meeting of the executive of the West Coast branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union was held in the Grey County Chambers this afternoon. Present: Messrs W. Clayton (chairman), J. Mulcare (Ngahere), D. Baybutt (Totara Flat), J. D. Andrews (Rotokohu), F. E. Koud (Punakaiki), L. Ditely (Arahura), H. G. Carter (Ngahere), D. Shannahan, W. Norton, and A. Muir (Grey), Cowan (Rotomanu), D. Jellie (Ahaura). The chairman and Mr J. Mulcare reported having interviewed the railway business manager, Mr Pawson, regarding cheaper freight for chaff from Canterbury. Mr Pawson had promised to go into the matter and to meet representatives of the Union at an early date to further discuss the position. It was resolved that an allowance to cover expenses be made to secretaries of branches to enable them to attend the annual conference. Mr Carter suggested that the different branches might arrange with the local bodies in their districts to receive a deputation to discuss the matter of votes for country roads, and suggest the roads for which- money is most needed. It was resolved that this bo done. It was decided to support a remit from the Dominion Executive regarding the .compulsory dehorning of cattle and neck-branding of stock. It was agreed to support a remit from the Arahura branch asking the Government to compulsorily eliminate scrub cattle from dairy herds. It was agreed to co-operate with the Forestry Department in the matter of lifting the restriction on deer on the West Coast. The chairman and Mr Jellie were appointed»to wait upon the Minister for Lands during his forthcoming visit. in connexion with the removal of mining reservations off river flat lands. The Ngahere District branch forwarded the following remit: "That in view of the . great success of the primary producers' bank in Australia, the executive urge upon headquarters that, irrespective of how those investigating in other lands may report, this Union demands legislation and assistance at once establishing an agricultural bank in New Zealand." The matter was held over pending a report from the Dominion chairman. A committee comprising Messrs Mulcare, Carter, and Clayton were appointed to cooperate with Fields Instructor. Dajgleish, to go into the question of farm economics, with a view to bringing down a report on the subject.
