SUMNER ITEMS.

All Baints* Church. The Harvest Thanksgiving services were held on Sunday, the church being prettily decorated with antumn tints and fruit. There were good congregations, and in the evening the Rev. S. Parr gave an address. Appropriate psalms and hymns were sung. St. Andrew's Mission Boom. The Bedcliffs Harvest Thanksgiving service was held on Sunday evening when the Kev. H. York, vicar of Riccarton, preached to a large congregation. West Clifton. An enthusiastic meeting of the residents of West and Upper Clifton, was held last Monday evening to discuss the renovation of the different right-of-ways before the bad weather conies. -ft was decided to re-grade and screen Mulgan's track, and also to repair all the fences broken down by the slips last -winter. It was also decided to write to the Sumner Borough Council for permission to form the right-of-way from Alexandra terrace to Victoria terrace, which is owned by the Council as a pipe reserve from the upper reservoir. The residents agreed to pay the cost of the formation and to ask the Council to supply sufficient screenings. This work will mean that those people using Mulgah 's track will be enabled to reach Upper Clifton without crossing private property. Salvation Army Concert. A most successful concert was given by the Salvation Army, in the Town Hall on Tuesday evening. Items were given by the Salvation Army Band, Captain Bridge, D. B. M. Mayfield, Sister Wilkinson, B. M. Taylor and Sister E. Meadows. Peace Memorial. At the last meeting of the Borough Council it was definitely stated .that the Council was not paying for the erection of the Memorial lamps and wall, the only charge incurred by the Council was that for cartage of the stone from the quarry to the site of the wall. Life-Saving Club. A commitee meeting was held on Thursday evening, Mr J. C. Macdonald presiding. The chairman reported that members of the Beautifying Association would be invited to meet members of the committee for the purpose of making plans for the improvement of the ground round the pavilion. Some discussion took place concerning the Benson Shield, and it was decided to write to the secretary of the Surf Association pointing out that the club had not been given any notice whatever of the fixture. < It was also decided to write to,the New Brighton Club in order to explain the position to them. 1 Concert. A concert was given on Thursday evening by Miss, Bessie Macdonald'a pupils,* for the purpose of raising funds for the St. Saviour's Orphanage. Items were contributed by Misses Millicent Jennings, Eay Collingwood, Kathleen Serine, Netty Kruse, Hilda Beaumont, Sheelah Chapman, Thelma Wilson, Nola Donavan, Mae Miller, Arline Power, Pat May, Pat Gregory, Joan Ofborn, Gladys Rose, Delia Prisk, Maureen Campbell, Margaret Macdonald, Ada Rawson, Enid Lawson, Isobel Harland, and Messrs Leo Coffey and Ralph Richaids, Mrs Adam acted as pianist. -Jubilee Committee. A meeting of the Jubilee Committee of the Sumner District High School was held on Thursday evening. The Sumner Borough Council advised that permission had been granted for the use of St. Leonard's Bquare for the jubilee sports. The business people would be invited to close on that afternoon. It was decided to limit the attendance of ex-pupils to those over eighteen years of age. For Seamen. At a well-attended meeting of the Sumner Ladies' Guild the president, Mrs Merry, made a presentation to Mrs Thornley, who has for a number of years rendered valuable services to the Gulid. Mrs Wathew contributed several songs. \ Ladieli' Rifle Oliib. , The Sumner-Redcliffs Ladies' Miniiature Rifle Club opened its season under very favourable conditions. Mrs Trerise, the president, expressed her pleasure at so large an attendance, and extended a very hearty welcome to the members and their friends. She oxpressed the hope that they would have another enjoyable season, and hoped that good shooting progress would be made.. She then asked the Mayoress of Sumner to fire tin first shot. Mrs W. H. Nicholson, who registered a bull amidst applause, said that it -was a great pleasure for her to attend. She was. delighted to see the number of young members present, and would always be pleased to know that the successes of the past were being maintained. At the conclusion of practice shooting, supper was served, and Mr W. S. Wharton, in congratulating the junior members upon their good shooting, urged them to adopt the advice of their coaches if they wanted to get the best results.
