French polico shot dead five Chinese and wounded ten when forty convicts attempted to escape from th« gaol in the French Concession after overpowering the warders. The leaders opened with a master key the doors of 40 cells after filling their own shackles. The attempt was the culmination of two years' plotting. Four of the convicts afterwards hanged themselves in their oella.
