EDUCATION.

MEETING OF THE BOARD. The Canterbury Education Board mei yesterday morning. Present—Messrs T. Hughes (chairman), W. A. Banks, J. Maze, G. W. Aimitage, W. H. Wiaeor, G. J. Gow, E. H. Andrews, C. S. Thompson, R. Wild, and H. J. Bignell. The question of a junior high school for Christchurch was referred to the Appointments and Normal School Committees for a report. The child welfare superintendent's request for the use of the Board room occasionally for sittings of Special Court was granted. The Appointment* Committee reported as follows: Information asked for not having been received from outlying committees, consideration of the question ■ of establishing a Junior High School at Geraldino was deferred. The Hokitika committee's application for retention of 3rd secondary assistant, was referred to the Department for favourable consideration. The committee suggested the closing of th South Spit School and conveyance of pupils to Hokitika. It was resolved to ask ihe Department to approve of the proposal, provided the cost was less than at present. A letter was received from Waimste H.S. Board covering a resolution to the effect that the Department be asked to establish a Junior High School. It was resolved to approve of the proposal. A letter was .eceived from the Publioity Department regarding the exhibition of the picture "Glorious New Zealand" to school children. The matter was referred to the committees and headmasters to make the necessary arrangements. ' A letter was received from the Auckland Board regarding appointment of h?ad teachers to schools of Grade JIIA and upwards. It was resolved that in order to remove any doubt as to the Boards powers to limit these positions to masters, the proposed amendments be agreed to. Buildings. The Buildings Committee reported as follows: . _ _ ~ An application from the Bunanga Baths Committee to construct the swimming baths on the school grounds was granted. The Waikari Committee wrote leporttrjg the destruction of the school by fire on the evening of Monday, March SStod. The committee applied for the early rebuilding of the sohool, and it was resolved to urge the Department to have the work put in hand immediately. A report was presented by Messrs Andrew* and Winsor, who had vieHed the district for the purpope of holding an enquiry ffiw the cause. The report was adopted, and a, vote of thanks accorded to the members concerned. . . The A'lenton Committee wrote protesting against being asked to contribute towards the cost of enclosing corridor at school, but agreeing to find the sum of £3O, as in its opinion the work was of an wrgent nature." It was therefore decided to finance the proposal as under:—Grant from the. Department JCIO, contribution from the* committee £3O, grant from Board's ffltW; terance fund £10; total cost of work £Bo.} An amended plan for the provision ..of, accommodation for the Secondary Department at Methven was approved., !. It was resolved that the chairman _ pi, the Buildings Committee, in conjunction, with Messrs Gow and Maze, visit the Hlgnfield district for the purpose of ascertaining whether * suitable site can be obtained for the establishment of a new school. A report was presented by the members | deputed to visit Pareora West in connexion with the selection of a site for the new school. The report was adopted, and it was resolved to ask Mr G. Wi'tans to agree to the termß outlined therein. An application was received from the Bromley School Committee for the remodelling of the school to be placed on the Board's list of urgent works. A report was received from the members deputed to consider the question of rebuilding or remodelling the school. The members recommended that the school be remodelled, and it was resolved that the proposal be placed on the Board's urgent list for the current financial year, the architect to prepare the necessary plan and estimate for submission to the Department, i.i. It was deoided to instruct the architect to report on the Sumner Committee's application' for:—Renovation of remaining three rooms in the old sohool and repajr of fences around the school grounds. A deputation from the New Brighton School Committee, consisting of Messrs Buxton, Langford, and Lever, waited on the committee, and urged the establishing of a manual training building at New Brighton. After' hearing the deputation, the committee recommended that an application should be made to the New Brighton Borough Council requesting that the quarteracre 6ite in Nelson street suggested be vested in the Board, and that an application be msdc to the Department asking for a grant to cover the coßt of erecting a building and providing equipment. The report was adopted. The Agriculture Committees report and the Finance Committee's report were adopted.
