TROUBLE ON WATERFRONT.
.CANOPUS HELD UP. The Westport Coal Company's steamer Canopus is held up at Lyttelton owing to the refusal of the watersiders to accept employment on her yes r terday morning. The cause of the refusal is not otficially disclosed by the men, but it is believed to be a move to obtain the extra lid per hoar paid at other ports, and which the Lyttelton watersiders are not receiving owing to their refusal to work on Saturday afternoons. The Canopus was diverted from LjV teltoh to Wellington during the wees, and then rc-divcrted to Lyttelton; and some of the men state that the rediversion was made merely to get mo cargo discharged at the cheaper rac? of labour. It is understood from the company that the diversion was made, because at the time there was no labour available at Lyttelton. When the Canopus arrived at Wellington it was found that there was also a shortage of labour there, so the Canopus was sent back to Lyttelton, where the position bad eased somewhat.
