ANNUAL PICNIC. A FINE OUTING. The popular picnic ground, Stewart's j Gully, was the scene of foot racing, quoits competitions, and various sports j on Saturday, when the employees of j th© Christchurch Press Coy., Ltd., held their annual picnic. Last year it was impossible to hold a picnic on account of the epidemic of infantile paralysis which "was raging, but this year made up for the omission of 1925. Altogether, about 450 people attended the picnic, and- in glorious weather an interesting sports programme ■was run off. There were full entries for all races, and many of the finishes were most exciting. At the conclusion of the sports programme the prizes werq presented by Mrs' Hampton Rhodes. Mr J. H. Rhodes represented the board of directors in the absence of the chairman. A telegram was received from Mr E. M. Macdonald, a director of the company, wishing the picnic every success. The manager, Mr A. M. Burns, apologised for the absence of the chairman of directors and patron of the Picnic Committee, Mr John Montgomery, who, ho said, was unavoidably absent through illness. They all greatly regretted that Mr Montgomery had not been able to take part in the very successful gathering. After the prizes had been presented, Mr Ehodes referred to the success of the picnic, and expressed the hope that there would bejust as good, if not a better picnic next year. Enthusiastic cheers were given for Mrs Ehodes, Mr Ehodes, Mr and Mrs A. M. Burns, and the secretaries, Mr E. T. Stickle and Miss I. M. Martin. The picnic train left Christchurch for the north at 8.55 a.m., and returned to Christchurch, leaving Stewart's Gully at 5.33 p.m. A considerable amount of credit is due to Miss Martin and Mr Stickle for general success of the arrangements. Besides the usual games, swimming attracted many of the picnickers, and the children were well catered for in the way of games and sports events. Tho officers for the picnic were as follows:, Patron, Mr John Montgomery; president, Mr A. M. Burns; committee, Misses "I. M. MArtin and E. M. Hughes, Messrs F. 11. Walls, S. R. Evison, R. V.
