POLAR FLIGHT.

AMUNDSEN CONFIDENT.

NO FAITH IN ABROPLAW&S

(3t CABLE— PSESS CBBUTIa'S TBLtGBAMS.)

(Received February 25th, 11 p.m.)

VANCOUVER, February 24.

Captain Roald Amundsen, the explorer, is confident of passing over the North .Pole in his flight in an Itnlianniade dirigible, of the semi-rigid type, from Spitsbergen to Point Barrow, Alaska, in May. He declared that there waa not the slightest doubt that ho would make it. Ho stated he was flying in the polar regions when the atmospheric conditions were ideal.

Captain Amundsen doubts the existence of a great continent in tha Polar region. As far as he was able to judge from years of experience in exploration work, the Polo was surrounded by millions of square miles of water, and enormous fields of ice.

He deeply regretted that Captain Wilkin?' expedition had decided to use aeroplanes in their Polar flight, because he believes aeroplanes, at tho present stage of development, are useless far Polar work. With dirigibles there waa no necessity o£ searching for non-exist-ent landing places, and there was a greater possibility of success.
