MOTOR SMASH.
CAR PLUNGES DOWN RIVERBANK. The cast-iron railings of the righthand south approach to the Fitzgerald .avenue bridge bore a strange appearance yesterday. Broken, in' several places, with about a, 12ft stretch torn away, and lying on the bank, they tell of a motor-car accident which occurred at 12.30 a.m. yesterday. A big taxi from the Iliuk garage plunged through the railings and down the bank, smashing the engine and most of the fittings, and injuring a lady passenger, who was taken to the Hospital. The other passengers and the driver, Sydney Mills, were uninjured. Tho car was travelling north along Fitzgerald avenue, and tho passengers were a party of women. A 12ft stretch of iron railing slants away from the. bridge, and it was this railing that was struck. The car missed the bridge and went over the bank, crashing on to a concrete sump, about sft in diameter, that stands on tho bank. After the. crash the car turned over, lying on its side against the sump, the bonnet being under the bridge decking. The engine was completely smashed, the glass fittings and windows, were' shattered, and the cushions mid interior gear piled in confusion. The_ panels of the driver's door and the side of the car were battered in.
Early yesterday morning the car was removed and lifted back to the road by a hand crane.
