MACKAY'S COMMISSION. About 65 years ago, the whole of the West Coast was purchased from the Maoris for £3OO. James Mackay received instructions in April, 1859, to. proceed to tho Coast and buy the country from the Natives. The laud between the Grey (Mawhera) and Hokitiku, rivers was the centre of the greenstone- districts, and was "tapu." In consequence, Maeka.y experienced extreme difficulty in coming to terms, but eventually, in ISGO, arranged tho details of the purchase at a tangi at Okarito. At Grey mouth on May 21at, 1860, tho deed was signed, and possession of land which was later to .yield, in gold alone, £26,000,000 passed to tho representative it the Queen for £3OO.
