Newman, Chief Medical Officer of the Health Ministry, introducing the Ministry's report on cancer of the breast, points out that investigations confirmed the belief that marriage and child-bearing, instead of favouring cancer, actually prevented it. Investigations in Holland, Italy, and England proved that mortality from cancor was greater among spinsters than among married women.
