PREVENTION OF STRIKES.

FARMERS OFFER SUGGESTIONS. A few suggestions as to the prevention and possible ways of ending strikes were offered by speakers at the meeting of the North Canterbury branch of the Farmers' Union yesterday. The Omihi branch wrote' suggesting that an effort should be made to have the clause giving preference of employment to unionists deleted from the Arbitration Court awards. Mr E. A. Foster explained that when there were strikes the prevented the employment of free labour. Tho chairman suggested that it would be more'appropriate to brinjr such an important question before the Provincial Couucil, which met in .May. It would be a difficult problem to "settle. Mr Foster moved that the question should be referred to the Provincial Council. He Iso considered that secret ballots should be taken at workers' meetings. "They take the vote on a show of hands," he said, "and I believe that if a secret ballot were taken there would be no strikes, because most of the men are against them." It was decided to send both requests to the Provincial Council.
