PERSONAL. {SPECIAL TO "THE PRESS.") GREYMOUTH, February 24. Mr W, T. Trcgurtha, Assistant District Traffic Manager at Christchurch, who has been relieving Mr A. E. Firman, returned to-day to Christchurch. Mr J. Kerrigan, Chief Veterinarian for Canterbury and Westland, who has been visiting the West Coast, returned to-day to Christchurch. Dr. T. F. Telford, District Health Officer for Canterbury and Westland, returned this morning to Christchurch. Dr. Eleanor Baker McLaglan, Medical Officer for the Canterbury Education Board's district, returned to Christchurch to-day. Mrs G. Kear returned to-day from a visit to Christchurch. Mr a7ul Mrs N. Dale leave to-morrow on a visit to Duuedin. Mesdames A. Smith and A. Hagenson leave by to-morrow's express en route to New Plymouth. Among the inward passengers by today's express were Mesdames A. Kibble, R. Hall, C. McKechnie, Misses Seddon and Sunbyc, Messrs T. Deere, J. McKinty, A." Kibble, McDonald, and W. Suviell. Messrs A. Mauderson and S. Baddely, of Runanga, left to-day for the North Island, where they will enter into business. Miss A. White left to-day on a visit to Dunedin. Mr and Mrs J: Webley, of Nelson, are visiting Greymouth, Mr Jack Keat' g, of Greymouth, who underwent an operation for appendicitis at Lcwishnm Hospital, Christchurch this week, :3 now progressing favourably.

Mr and Mrs P. A. Sargeut, of Sydney, arrived from Christchurch to-day. Mr and Mrs S. H. Brown, of Waihi, who havo been visiting Mr and Mrs S. IF. Collier, left this morning for Christchurch, en route to Dunedin. Hon. H. L. Michel, M.L.C., was a passenger to-day by the express to Christchurch. He was accompanied by his daughter,- Mrs T. R. Saywcll. Senr.-sergeant P. J. McCarthy, who has been relieving Senior-sergeant Ryan at Westport, has returned to Greymouth.

Among the outward passengers by to-day express were, Mr and Mrs E. J. Appleton (Hokitjka), Miss McMeekan, and Mrs A. T. Dowell. . Tho death oceurrod at Westport on Monday evening of Mr George Bowley, ;i very old resident, who arrived on the West Coast fifty-four years ago. Ho leaves a widow and one son.

Mr Silas Jenkins, who is leaving Westport to reside in Auckland, has resigned his seat on the Wostport Borough Council. Messrs Whittlo and Coppersmith, of Denniston, left to-day to attend the Fi^o s Brigades conference at Dunedin. , Mr and Mrs H. R. Young, of Westport, left for Wellington this morning. Mrs A. Caldwell, of Westport, loft this morning for Timaru, where she will permanently reside. Mr Alex Hunter is mentioned as a probable candidate for a soat on the Buller Licensing Committee at the coming elections. The Eev. Mousignor Walshe, of Westport, to-day celebrated the anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood.

Mrs Dunn has rcturnod to Westport from a visit to Wellington and Nelson.. Mine Fined. An official of the Stockton mine, named J. Chippendale, was convicted and fined £1 lis with costs £2 17s Cd at Wostport yesterday for using obsceno language to Ernest Taylor, a mine omployeo. New Westport Hotel. It is understood that the Grand Hotel at Westport, which was destroyed by firo twelve months ago, is to be roplaced by an extensivo brick building. The estimated cost is stated to run into five figures. Railway' Affairs. For the past two weeks the Railway Department has been conducting a series of experiments for the purpose of testing tho capabilities a£ Q locomotives of tho superheated type and the saturated or wet stoain typo using only local coal. In tho trials, it is understood, tho superheated engine was found tho more suitable and economical for working. It is likely that tho .latter locomotives will be largely used in. future on the main West Coast sections. A very successful trial was givon by a superheated locomotive on the express run to Christchurch this morning. Kumara Fire Brigade. The following is tho team to represent the Kumara Volunteer Fire Brigade at Dunedin:—Lieutenant G. McEnany, Firemen Benyon, Fitzgerald, and Faheyl Ex-Captain W. J. Benyon, sen., Las been appointed judge at Dunedin, also delegate representing the Kumara Brigade. Magistrate's Court. At the Greyniouth Magistrate's Court to-day, before Mr W. Meldrum, S.M., Charles Highaw Pepper pleaded not guilty to a charge of failing to account for J6s 7W, the property of Tucks, Ltd., Cliristchurch, collected by him on December 24th, 1025. Ho was remanded to appear at Christchurch on March 2nd.
