LONDON, January 29. 1 lie promoter of a girls' boxing tourney has called off tho contests, declaring that lie did not wish to oppose public opinion, ■which clearly was not ready for such sport. Tho dec ision coincides with a letter from tho Home Secretary replying to a protest against tho contest in which ho points out that though tho contests would be ail outrage he had 110 power to interfere if tho girls were merely sparring without the object of ono winning by inflicting injuries on the other. He adds: This would not bo illegal because the Legislature never imagined such a disgraceful exhibition would eve-r bo staged in Britain. Miss Newton, who lins been training with male boxers, is extremely disappointed, and declares tho action is unfair. iShe says: I will proceed with my sparring nevertheless, and would not forego it for anything in the world. I do not know what all tho fu:;s is about.
Miss Newton is describo-1 as extraordinarily active and quickfooted, and able to break down a male opponent's guard.
