$ Mr Justice Alpers is paying a brief visit to Dunedin. Mr A. Bell, Secretary for Education, is "SC present in Christcliurch. Sir Robert and Lady tout have returned to Wellington from Dunedin. Mr F. W. Hunnibell will open the new school at West Spreydon (Lyttelton street) on Monday morning. Sir Francis Heath, secretary of the British Department of Science and Industries, is due to arrive in Wellington on Tuesday next. Mr L. Hartley, of Rangiora,, who has been acting as headmaster at Te Ono (Chatham Islands), returned to Christcliurch, yesterday. Guests at Warner's Hotel include Messrs W. E. Reynolds (Wellington), H. Waddingjon (Sydney), and H. Smith (Wanganui). Among the guests at the United Service Hotel are Messrs J. MacDonald (Wellington), C. Powell (Melbourne), and John Fuller (Sydney). Messrs H. T. Merritt (Auckland), A.' D. Liddell (Wellington), C. M. Finlayson, and B. Martin (Dunedin) are at the' Clarendon Hotel. Mr W. Ivirkpatrick, headmaster of the Redcliffs School, will be on sick leave for three months, and his place will be filled by Mr W. H. Reeves, who recently returned from the Islands. The chairman of the Canterbury Education Board, Mr T. Hughes, proceeds to the W 7 est Coast to-day. He will take part in the opening of the new school at Harihari and returas- to Christchurch on Tuesday night. Maior-General R. Young, 0.8., C.M.G., D.5.0., G.0.C., N.Z. Forces, will arrive this morning from the north. One of his duties will be the inspection of the New Zealand' Medical Corps at Burwood. Mr 31. E. Lyons, M.P. for Lyttelton, left last night for the Chatham Islands for the purpose of making himself acquainted. at first hand with the needs of this portion of the electorate. Mr Lyons will be absent from town for about a fortnight. Mr D. J. McGowan, president of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, intends leaving on a visit to the south on Wednesday next. He will visit the Wakatipu-Te Anau-Miiford Sounds, and later attend the conference of the New Zealand master carriers in Dunedin. The Rev. J. J. North is commencing to-morrow his last month as a Christchurch minister He has served gl years in this City. From 1895 to 1903 he had charge of the Spreydon Baptist Church, and from 1913 till now he has been in charge of the Oxford Terrace Church. He goes at the month end to Auckland as first principal of the Baptist College for candidates for the ministry. 4 The Hon. A. ,D. McLeo'd (Minister for Lands) will make a tour of the Bay of Islands district at the beginning-of next month with Mr Allen Bell, M.P. for Bay of Islands, and Mr W. Jones, M.P. for Marsden. The object of the Minister's tour is to investigate the possibility of settlement of idle lands, swamp drainage schemes, and the sand drift and kauri gum problems. The party will arrive at WTiangarei on ■Thursday, February 4th, and after visiting different localities, will return to Whangarei on Saturday, February 13th.
