■Band Concert. The band concert given l\v the Sumner Marine Band on Sunday evening was much appreciated by those who were present. A beautiful evening resulted in "the attendance of a very large crowd, and very favourable comment was made on the continued improvement of the Band. Heavy Seas. Tremendous seas, which have severely tested the Clifton Esplanade and the breakwater at Bell's baths, havo been experienced 'lately. The reason for this can be ascribed to the northerly winds which have been prevalent. The sight of huge waves crashing into the Clifton wall, shooting high into the air and then sending the remnant of their forces trickling across the road has provided a fine spectacle for many visitors. General. It is evidently part of the routine for the officers now undergoing a refresher course at Sockburn to pay a visit to Sumner early in the morning, as each day this week an aeroplane has flown low over the beach, generally between six and seven o'clock in the morning. The favourite stunt seems to be to make a swoop down on a group of bathers, scattering them in all directions, and then to soar harmlessly above their heads. Sumner Life-Saving Club. The regular meeting of the Sumner Life-Saving Club was held in the pavilion on Thursday evening, Mr J. C. McDonald presiding. Three new members were elected. Mr T. B. Boultou wrote enclosing a donation to the club. It was resolved to continue the weekend practices for the Ivesteven Cup at 11 a.m., and make arrangements for picking the team at once. It was also decided to hold instruction classes ,i'or team work, land drill, and resuscitation, ■ regularly each Thursdy evening. The meeting decided that the competition for the Mayoral Cup should take place towards the end of Feburary, entries to close on February 7th, and the ballot for teams to take place and be announced immediately Oiftcr Subject to their acceptance,, the following were elected to fill vacancies on the committee —Messrs G. Burns, A. Smith, and W. J. Sim. It was decided to. write to the Surf Association regarding the 1925 contest for the Benson shield, which was postponed last year on account of the epidemic of infantile paralysis.
