Grossenbacher, tho keeper of the famous bears' pit at Berne, brought an action for defamation against three of liis employees who accused him of cruelty to bears.

During the trial two bears were brought in. They immediately began to growl angrily, evidently expecting a beating from the three defendants. Then Grossenbacher entered and the bears grunted with joy, licking both his hands and even attempting to hug • tlio smiling keeper. "The bears have judged the case," said the judge. "No further evidence is required."
