NOTES ON THE RACING. (SPHCIAIi TO "THE PEESS.") DUJS T EDIN, January 28. _. Tlio Forbury Park Trotting Club opened its Summer Meeting- to-day, in fine weather. There was a largo attendance, and the racing throughout the day was full of interest. The track was in good order, although the surface waa loose. The times registered by the winners and placed horses were good. Speculation was brisk, with the result that the totalisator turnover showed an increase of £2829 compared with tho earns day last year. Tho oloyeutb-hour withdrawal <if Border Lass, Peter Boy, Ngapuna, Genevieve, Elusive, Elzear, and To Repa from the Vauxhall Handicap left eighteen starters. Tho three-year-old filly Kukute was favourite, with Credit Slip and Nelson Ata the best backed of the others. There was a general mix-up at the start, and tho early leaders included Credit SUp, Kelson Ata, Red Peter, and Wildbino. Passing tho stand Credit Slip was in charge, but broke, and Nelson Ata assumed tha lead, followed by Credit Slip and ."Wildbine, with Red Peter and Real Lady at the. head of the others. At the entrance to the straight Nelson Ata looked a winner, but tired; and Real Lady put in a strong challenge and won decisively from Credit Slip, Nelson Ata, and Wildbine. The winnor, Real Lady, is an aged mare by Young McKinney from an Ard Patrick mare. She trottedva sound race, which wu3 responsible for her success. Credit Slip broke twice; otherwise she made a good showing for a maiden trotter, kelson Ata appeared to be mado too much use ot in tho early stages, and failed to stay, as did Wildbine. Kukut© broke at the start, but once into her stride showed up sufficiently tvoll to susgest that she, -nil run well ill tho Now Zealand Trotting .stakes on Saturday. The- race was run in _ iast time, and tho placed horses, Real Lady, Credit Slip, and Nelson Ata, improved upon their handicap 5 1-Sscc, ssec, and <lscc T™S y iargo field of eighteen horses faced the starter in the Electric .Handicap, 'and after being ridden with excellent judgment by J. Walsh, the lnvcrcargill-owncd and trained Lonamhor won nicely from Golden Devon, one of the outsiders of the field, who was followed by fat. Mania, i Hydkspes. and Mencmbcv. Hydaspos led I for sevma'furlongs, when she, tired, and was , beaten out o£ a place. St. Maura looked » winner two furlongs from home, but could no sustain her effort The lavourrto, M«j whariti, was prominent for naif a mile, and Golden Sun for five furlongs. Ratana brow Wv in tho back straight the last time and interred with/ those behind lym. while Rosio Nut rucco. a long way below tations. Schoolmate:, ridden by A. Buttei field, fell in *? P[f ml T y V?o t -"a utf dislocated his shoulder. H. i J 08 * *£J"f d etituted. The mishap kept A. Uutternoia out of W saddle and sulky for the rest of tie day, and it will be a- few weeks before to » quarinus " -,,„,,„„ ni-hine and in for %f startd Vtho »uncdin Cup Handicap. NoUon Derby was favourite, with Countryn,7„;,'- Own and Loganwood backed. TilJTvdor Ouimet refused to go away ma v.' ond Countryman was turned side-on „t the" start, and prevented Logan Chief and Prince Pointer from getting a clear run. Black \dmiral, from 12yds behind, MS boon in a good position, which he maintained until the turn for home, when ho drew i clear from the field, and won with sometnta* in hand. Black Admiral has been a good stake-winner this season and amongst tho important handicaps that he has won are the principal races at Oamaru and Tlmaru. Queen's Own, who has been racing consistently this season, beat all but tho winner, with Loganwood third, Taloro fourth, and the favourite, Nelson Dcrbj. lifth. The last-named had every chance, but raced a long way below expectations, and it is doubtful whether he is as well as when ho won at Auckland last month. Logan Chief and Prince Pointer both mado up tbeir lost ground in tho early stages of tho race, but the offort was too great, and both finished a long Iway behind tho placed horses. Waitaki Girl was prominent for three-parts o£ the journey, but tho display of Dolly Dillon was disappointing. Despite a penalty of 24yds for his win at InveTcargill, Jolly Pet found no difficulty in disposing of twenty-nine others in the Southland Handicap. Tho "son of Coldstream Bells and Jolly Girl got a good run in the early stages, and was soon in a good position. Entering tho last circuit ho went to tho front, and had the result in safo keeping a long way from home. Avenger was under pressure a long way from home, and finished second, with Rosethorne, who broke at the start, third. Outside the placed division Wairua, Four Bells, and First Toll made the best showing. Ruby Carbine and Ivy Viking both lost their drivers, who escaped injury. The Otago Cup Handicap was a good race, and resulted in a win for Woodlass, an
aged mare bv Woodchild from Yankee Lass, owned and trained by W. T. Lone. She was quickly iuto her stride, and taking charge at the end of the first circuit led lor tho remainder of the journey, and scored a popular win. After an interrupted passage, John Mauritius finished fast, and beat all but the winner. Tho Australian-bred seining Cbarle3 Dixie was third, and only for iruxinjr his gait more thau once he would have finished close up. Audorainiou was fourth, followed by Bonny Spec, Kscapade, and Young Blake. Audo Bell and Master Audo ran well for a milo and n half. -Money Spiner and Judge Hancock broke when extended, while tho rest of the field were all beaten for speed. , ~_ ~. Silk Thread, owned by the Wellington sportsman Mr J. K. McKcnzje. and framed bv D. Withers, gave a finished display of free-legged pacing in the King George Handicap, and won nicely from Treuand, Cardinal Logan, -Haunui, Some Wilkes, and Lord Bin--cii The winner. Silk Thread, is an American importation, and since comma to >cw I Zealand has proved very suceessitil. lrenand paced one of his best races to date, and appears just good enough to be beaten. The favourite. Cardinal Logan, was turned side on at the siart, and lost some ground, but even when on tho journey he failed to show the same dash as when he won at Greymouth carlv in the mouth. Haunui was alwavs in "a good position, and finished close" up behind the placed horses. Rita Jive showed a rare turn of speed for twelve furlongs, when she tired and finally finished in the ru<-k. Biug Boy and Firelight stood at I the post, and Prince Swithin and Dixie's I Trido raced a long way below their best. Speculation was brisk in the Flying Han- ! dicap. J. Henderson's pair, Brentloc and I ivv Audubcii beintr favourite?, with Bruce nest in demand. Brentloe was the first to show out, and making all his own running, inst failed in the last few strides to stall off a strom; clmllence from Bruce, and tho pair passed the winning post locked to--other. Half a dozen lengths away was Beckv Loean, who beat Rnicole by a narrow j margin, with the rest of the field strung out some distance back.
