SEVERE ATLANTIC STORM.
STEAMERS IN DIFFICULTY. (BT CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION- COrrSiGOT ) (nSUTES's TELE3JUM9.) NEW YORK, January 26. Tho lives of at least 60 seamen are in jeopardy on two steamships battling in mid-ocean against one of tho worst, storms ever encountered in the Atlantic. Tho liner President Roosevelt is standing by the British freighter Antinoo to aid her crew of 25 if the wonst befalls the ship. Tho President Roosevelt lost two seamen of a rescue party which made an unsuccessful attempt to board the distressed craft. At tho same time the liner Bremen is hastening to help another British freighter, tho Lariston, which is in n serious plight. Radio-broadcasting officials, whoso attempts to reach Europe have been marred during the last two nights by S.O.S. signals from distressed ships, will make another effort to-night to restore communication.
WAVES FIFTY FEET HIGH. (AUSTRALIAN AKD K.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION) (Received January 27th, 8.55 p.m.) NEW YORK, January 26. Seas rolling fifty feot high arc reported in mid-Atlantic. Various big Jincrs, including tho Leviathan and Aquitania, are delayed for two or throo days. The Roosevelt, which is standing by tho British freighter Antinoe, lost sight of her behind a curtain of snow. A new messago came, lator from tho Roosovelt stating that sho again had sighted tho Antinoe. Tho latter was entirely disabled, and hor engines wero not working. Her lights, except for hand lanterns, were extinguished. Tho Roosevolt mado a gallant effort to romovo tho crow, launching a lifoboat in tho raging sea. A wavo crushed it against tho liner's side, two sailora being drowned. Rescuo efforts had to bo temporarily abandoned, but the last report stated tho Antinoo was still afloat. A telegram from Halifax, Nova Scotia, reports that six men wero Baved by the German steamer, Bremen, from tho disabled British freighter, Laristan, which, since Monday night, has been lying in a raging sea off port.'
