BARE LEGS.
* —— IN PAVLOVA'S BALLET. ; (from ottr oktt' correspondent.) . , LONDON,-/November G. - Mme. Pavlova was amused by the refusal of the Birmingham Justices to allow any of her performers to appear in bare legs at tho Grand Theatre, where she was giving a flying matinee. The restriction is not new, but , Pavlova, regards it as ridiculous, especially bearing in mind the fact that bare legs and feet conform, to, th© whole spirit and tradition of tho Anitra dance, -which is performed by Miss J£lsa d'Arcy. When Mme,. Pavlova ; learned of the ban on bare legs she authorised her manager either to ctit out this solo dance or request Miss d'Arcy to comply with the requirements of the local authorities. \ "Mme. Pavlova," said Mr Edmund B/usson, her manager, "is too great an artist and too jealous of her reputation to permit any member of War, company to do, wear, or-not wear on the stage anvthing likely to offend her public." 1 Miss d'Arcy said the wearing of tights and sandals 'which' had been decided uoon would, she feared, be less comfortable than, bare legs and feet, but would not, she hoped, interfere with, the success of her dance. The attitude of the authorities towards the Pavlova performance did not differ in the slightest resplct from that in relation to any other music-hall performance in the city. About ten years ago the Magistrates prohibited bare legs on the stage, and their decision has never been questioned. :• The performers mav appear in tights.. The Magistrates refuse even to allow bare feet. Their ruling is that tho whole of the lower portions of the body must be covered. Police attend every music-hall performance.
