FORESTRY.

SELWYN PLANTATION BOARD. A meeting of the Selwyn Plantation Board was held yesterday morning. Present: Messrs G. H. Bullard (chairman), S. A. Staples, R. Nairn, G. Kail, J. Storry, G. Scott, R. M. Morten, W. T. Poppic, J. A. Adams, C. Wolfe, and the Hon. George Witty, M.L.C. The Superintendent reported that a reasonable measure of success generally in all transplantation work had been atttained although Oregons and gums received a decided set-back from the recent frost. Milling operations were being steadily carried on, and since the last record some 106,000 superficial feet of pine, 2500 superficial feet of Oregon, 2140 superficial feet of gum, and 124 cords of firewood wtrc sawn and disposed of. The clearance of undergrowth and preparation for early filling was now in progress at the Darfield plantation, at which central reserve the mill would bo located. Some 40 cords of gum and 2000 stakes were also cut by contract and put on rail at Darfield, in addition to the disposal of some 30 cord's of pinewood. A small staff had betr* engaged in the necessary annual maintenance work in the form of cutting and grubbing noxious gorse and broom, clearing water-races, ploughing and cultivating firebreaks, attending to fences, and general nurserv work. It was pleasing to note that after "the firming treatment adopted, trees affected by winds last season were showing

no ill-effects, and were making exceptionally Kood headway. Fair progress had been made on the clearance of gorse and broom at Cashmere Hills reserve, where the roadline fence would te erected at an early date. The report was adopted. A credit balance of £44 3s 4d was reported.
